France Considering Reopening a Recently Closed Coal-Fired Power Plant

France is considering reopening a recently closed coal-fired power plant in the wake of Ukraine crisis.

France generates about two-third of its electricity at nuclear power plants, with coal accounting for about 1% of its energy mix.

The 600 MW Emile Huchet power plant in east France was shut down on 31March. Facility at Cordemais in west France is the only coal-fired stations in operation.

France is one of the members of European countries to suffer Russian gas flow disruption in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

At least a dozen of France's 56 reactors are currently offline for maintenance and repair work as the Russian gas supply disruptions have coincided with nuclear reactor outages in France.

French gas transmission system operator GRTgaz reported reduction in Russian gas flow. The country's four LNG regasification terminals are operating at close to full capacity, calling on shippers and stakeholders to prioritize storage refilling. more

Such a wealth waiting to be unlocked. Waste generates so much wealth, therein lies the scope of technologies that give alternates to coal. Energy obtained from bio-methanation here could give us the bridge between futuristic choices and coal. Coal provided the much needed energy, when development was the immediate necessity for taking us towards the next level, a civilisational requirement wherein people lived together aggregating themselves around industry, living by industrialisation going alongside trade, rather than simply agricultural produce alone. Coming full circle, now, sustainability requires a circular economy. Pollution caused by organic matter when compared with fossil fuels is much lesser. Pollution depending upon how much earlier in the cycle gets from vegetation until the vegetation's fossilisation, there are some stages in-between that may yield energy, using the apropriate technology, such as digesters, the source gets cleaner. Anaerobic digesters yielding high calorific value products - methane, cleaner than coal or petroleum derived diesel, being a stark example. more
Power of bio-methane can be unlocked. There are a variety of organic waste sources. All the four stages of bio-methane value chain, viz. capture, storage, distribution and use require innovations. AD (anaerobic digestor) is a ready to use technology where all available organic wastes can be anaerobically digested. It offers numerous socio-economic and environmentally benefits - green job creation, rural income generation, food and energy security improvement, restoration of soils, to name a few - all while cutting emissions. And the industry to achieve its full potential, it needs government support. Methane that leaks from food wastes is more destructive than CO2. AD treatment can divert food wastes, that otherwise get dumped in landfills, to contribute to circular economy. AD is used in sewage treatment. AD plants can boost biogas production from agricultural wastes, such as farm yard manures and slurries. Rolling out AD to process unavoidable wastes currently left to emit methane emissions into atmosphere can deliver GHG emission reduction. AD has an important role to play in responding to climate emergencies, at the global, national and local levels. more
Thanks for the information. Unfortunate. This at a time when we are trying to control the last gram of emission. Gas, before the Ukraine crisis, when being piped from Russia, was relatively clean compared with coal. Regasified LNG, involving logistics cost, the next option, when the Russian source of flow from the spigot locate there, turned off. Optimising the key here. more
