India's Goal of Reaching Net-Zero Emissions by 2070

India hopes to achieve the target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070 with the help of

(i) technology transfer and
(ii) low cost international finance.

India's climate actions have so far been largely financed from domestic resources.

As the strength of reaching net-zero emissions picks up momentum, initiatives, such as those for methane monitoring becomes important.

Use of UAVs(unmanned aerial vehicles), for example forms part of a comprehensive environment and climate change target program and also as development of a multilevel leak detection system.

Using UAVs for methane leak monitoring enables more accurate and faster measurements as well as lower costs compared to other monitoring methods.

Using domestically sourced UAVs allow inspection of facilities not only for natural gas fields but also long section of gas pipelines. UAVs can be equipped to operate in remote areas and deliver real-time video feed within a certain range when designed with hypersensitive gas analyzers.

The UAVs are an important element of the multilevel methane leak detection system, which includes satellite imaging and ground monitoring during site tours.

Shipments of US LNG declined as the Freeport LNG facility continued shut down, limiting the export capacity of US LNG. While the US government tries to fulfill promise to European leaders that help serve supplies of the gas at cryogenic temperature, Russian president seized full control of Sakhaline-2 in Russia's far east, one of the world's largest LNG projects.

As COVID-19 restrictions around much of the world are relaxing and economic activity recovers, enabling consumption to expand sharply and increasing the demands on available supplies, fragilities in the system are increasingly getting highlighted. more

Kolkata's Homeless during the Current Heatwaves: Long and extreme heat conditions will recur as the world keep warming. The actual temperature experienced by the homeless could be even more than what the weather stations announce. Exposure to continuous high temperatures and heat makes the homeless more vulnerable to heat-related ailments and mortality. Those living in a part of the city that has less green cover and more concrete and road infrastructure will experience more temperature as concrete absorbs heat. A survey conducted in 2018, following an order from the Supreme Court, showed that the city of Kolkata, for example had 7,272 homeless people. The numbers may have grown since the outbreak of Covid as the pandemic had robbed many of their livelihood, forcing them to move to the city in search of work. The heat has brought new challenges for the city’s “homeless”. A family living on a pavement in Moulali keeps shifting between two pavements to avoid the sun. A mother on a pavement near Ballygunge Phari has bought a rechargeable fan for her infant daughter - mother is able to bear the heat but infant daughter needs comfort. Fan runs for about three hours and battery needs recharging.Nearby mobile shops are available for recharging at a price of Rs 10 each time. Everyday they shift from one pavement to another in search of shade. Staying inside the hut becomes impossible due to sun as the temperature rises. They are able to cook only at night burning biomass and keep their cooked rice in water for consumption next day for lunch. Males in the city pavements take bathe in open taking the water from nearby municipality taps. Kolkata has been in the grip of above normal temperature for the past fortnight at least. more
India asks $100 billion aid from developed countries to reach net zero emission goal earlier, should have been given by 2020, but see where the money is going. The amount of funding required and the timeline for reaching net-zero depends on various factors such as: 1. India's current emissions levels across different sectors (energy, agriculture, industry etc.) 2. Projected emissions growth based on economic development and population growth 3. The cost and deployment rates of clean energy sources like solar, wind, nuclear etc. to replace fossil fuels 4. Investments needed to improve energy efficiency across sectors 5. Costs of transitioning infrastructural and superstructural development requiring sectors like steel, cement, aviation to low-carbon technologies. more
The rupee has fallen against dollar amid waning risk appetite among investors. Losses are restricted to some extent by (i) lower global crude prices (tankers hauling crude and gasoline are experiencing a period of strength not seen before in at least 25years and is buoyed by robust fuel demand and stretched sailing distances due to Russian invasion of Ukraine). (ii) a rally in domestic equities. The dollar index, which measures the greenback strength against a basket of six currencies has slipped down. Net buyers in the capital market were foreign institutional investors. This is amid softening of the dollar index.Net investment by Foreign Portfolio Investors(FDIs) was higher. Climate change is accelerating dangerous irreversible changes to environment and and contributing to extreme weather conditions. Banks and financial institutions are to be effectively equipped to deal with issues arising out of climate change. ESG (environment, social and governance) has become an important aspect while making investment decisions. For example, consider direct investment in small- cap biotech stocks. Failed drug therapies, fraud, and even death are a few things that come to mind when one decides to invest. When any of these bad news happens......, the stocks get crushed. more
The developed world has yet to deliver on their commitment of providing $100 billion to India, that could have helped India's goal being reached much earlier than 2070, which seems distant given the rate at which climate change is affecting the world, so adversely. On their part, rich Indians, in cahoots with capitalists manufacturing the demanded products gaming subsidies too have behaved aloof in acquiring private cars running on subsidised diesel, taking flights rampantly, and other consumerist lifestyles, that ultimately cause pollution. Yes, now, after introducing e-vehicles, we must see how quickly they both right this wrong. more
