Train speed

I just want to understand from all the Railway expert on this circle, what is the biggest problem/barrier for increasing the train speed of Express and super fast trains? I firmly believe that if we increase the avg speed by 20 to 30 km/hr, half of the problem will be solved. more

Railways should weed out inefficient signal men in their payroll. They give excuse that so many trains and less tracks...but have they ever tried to increase the efficiency. At every big station trains stop for 15-20 mins before entering which can be easily reduced if signal men are alert enough And work with full efficiency more
Dear Sunil Sir: I completely agree with you Sir. Though I am not a Railway Personnel or Engineer feel the Following factors has to be looked into carefully by railways before taking action for increasing the speed of the trains. There are better persons who understand these points than me,but, just for discussion purpose I am doting my views. 1) The running of other trains in the same tract has to be rescheduled which is a herculian process. 2) The track of Indian Railways has limitations to bear the speed. 3) The Costing part. 4) The technology. 5) The Strength of the Concrete Berths on which the trains ply. 6) Shortage of good Compartments which can bear the speed and friction. 7) The wheels of the coaches. 8) Quality of Manpower 9) The Technical persons 10)The Maintenance Staff. The list goes on. Any way the Indian Railways which is the Spine of our Country should look into the matter with utmost importance because Time is Money. Regards, Dr.Sriram 8334906005 more
May be we imbibe traditional belief that Govt is all for the poor. They will keep the poor as poor and keep feeding them for ever. Then who will pay for these? Average income of people increased many fold unaccounted but they do not want to lose the free bies of Govt programmes. Let us change this mind set. Main problems with the railways are two. 1. Finance and 2. Efficiency of the work force Should these two problems are fixed, it will be to the best. Let private or FDIs funding get into this system for improvement. No quality service will be free. Employment is only on merit basis. Reservation system should GO OUT. With these done, high speed tracks and operational efficiency will be in place automatically, of course with a good planning. more
The Railways' experiments along the Delhi-Agra section may tell us how much faster we can make our trains run. They've had some success with the Shatabdi/Gatimaan rake along that stretch, and hopefully they will have success with double-decker (lower costs to end passengers than Shatabdi/Gatimaan) and 24-coach sleeper rakes. Eventually, fully air-conditioned trains will be the way to go for higher speeds, and smarter financial management will be needed to ensure prices do not rise too much. Higher train speeds can be achieved by adding more pairs of tracks, and wherever they can't be laid side to side, they can be elevated above existing tracks. To make journeys faster, trains between major cities or junctions should not have too many stops in between- no more than four- and journeys to smaller towns should be provided by short-haul intercity/regional trains. Helping passengers change trains to save time is the way ahead for higher journey speeds. more
Train speed also decreases if there is fog, etc. In winters it becomes a nuisance. I had been to Germany and there the high speed trains run at an average speed of >150kmph irrespective of the weather conditions. If safety can be achieved at such high speeds using technology obviously, the same can be implemented here also and valuable time will be saved. more
