Query about Internet bookings
Good afternoon everyone,
I am in Australia but will be in India early next year. I have successfully made about 10 internet train bookings and everything is fine except.... most of the Electronic Reservation Slips have allocated me a carriage seat or berth. Does this mean for the un-allocated ones that I have to find the carriage from the sign on the platform then in the mad push for everyone to board...find my seat number from the chart posted(pasted) on the outside of the carriage? Or has the system improved?
For example I have the a seat allocated on the return journey from Ooty to Mettupalayam but nothing on the forward journey on the same day. Just a booking status of WL/1 which I assume is 'wait listed'.

Welcome to our Nation. W/L is waitlisted ticket. If you have booked with your mobile number registered, you will be getting your allotted seat number by SMS. In case, the ticket doesn't get confirmed, your money will be refunded to your bank/ credit card account. In all probability your ticket will get confirmed as it is WL/1. All the reservations and status can be known by sending SMS to 139 and message shall be PNR space. You will get up dates. There are reservation charts exhibited on notice boards on particular platform (I presume you call it as Track not platform) and if you arrive at Rail the station at least 30" before departure, you can patiently scan those sheets and locate your name and berth no. Further, if the train is starting point or halted at a major station for maintenance, you will gain 15-20" time and you can avail to check your name and berth no. on the chart exhibited on coach itself. It is always better to hold a local cell phone and use it to know your journey status. There is also mobileApp of railwaysn free through Googleplay which gives you accurate results of reservation, train delays, train location, expected time of arrival etc. etc. I worked in Reservation system for 19 years at a single station and hence information given above is 99% authentic and valuable. more

Mr. Neville, You can also check PNR status before hand which will give you information regarding the confirmation of your tickets. There are chances that your tickets may have huge number of waitlisters then you can also book tickets in another train to avoid last-moment hustle. more

Namaste, Welcome to India. Regarding your question, now the systems have improved so much that the chart has become irrelevant. If your wait listed ticket gets confirmed then you will be allotted a Coach and a Birth number. This information will be available to as early as 4 hours before the train starts from it origin station. Have a pleasant stay in India ! ! more
