Passenger Amenities at Railway Stations

Dear Circle Members:

Thanks for the inputs from you in July this year on Rail Budget and Transformation of Railways esp in regards to Passenger Amenities at Stations.

Indian Railways has recently issued guidelines enable participation of individuals, NGOs, Trusts, Charitable Institutions, Corporations etc, in Railways’ efforts for provision/improvement/upgradation/renovation of amenities at railway stations.

All Zonal Railways have been directed to seek sponsorship from Hon’ble Member of Parliament for provision of additional chairs/seating arrangements at railway stations under MPLAD scheme.

The above initiatives are the special efforts of the Government to enhance passenger amenities. Further, provision/maintenance/augmentation of amenities including drinking water, toilet facility and seating arrangements at railway stations is a continuous process and is undertaken subject to inter-se priority and availability of funds. With a view to improve the standard of cleanliness, Railways have planned multi pronged action by synergizing technology, education of users, provision of mechanized equipments and penalty provisions.

Members of this circle may share their views on key amenities that must be available at stations to help prioritize.

The quality of catering service need to be overhauled. Nobody is bothered about hygiene. Particularly on trains running from Chennai, the vendors don't even wash their uniforms. Personal hygiene also is a big question mark. Many times I have written complaint regarding the same. Nothing changes. more
Non license vendors should not be allowed in the reserved compartments when Pantry car is provided. They create avoidable nuisance in the compartments. more
The railway contractor sells food and beverages inside the compartments through his commision oriented employees in uniform. Some outside sellers with help of bribed policemen too sell all sorts of things even in AC compartments. This should be stopped with stringent action on police staff on duty. The used cups and packs need be collected back by the contractors employees after their sale, which litter the compartments. more
Recently I found at Howrah stn for Gitanjali Ex and Coromandel Ex the passengers for the general compartments were asked by GRP personnel on duty to form a Que. It is Good. Strangely it was seen the police have engaged agents to collect Rs.100 each from groups kept separately by the side of the que. These people were permitted to be let in ahead of the Lot in Que!!?? This is the incentive for the custodians of Law & Order to be proactive in maintaining the que with lathis in hand and shout. A secret investigation will pin them and exemplary punishment of DISMISSAL only will set things right which continues every hour in broad daylight!!Let us start as public have lost faith on the system. more
Many long root super fast trains are running with decades old condemned coaches which should have been discarded a long back. These coaches use to be dirty and the seats/berths/toilets in broken condition/in bad shape causing lot of discomforts to the passengers and need urgent replacement with new & modern coaches. Urgent attention of the Railways authorities is needed towards this matter. more
