Lower Berth Reservation Problem

Lower berths: MP HC asks Rlys to give preference to senior citizens, pregnant women over VVIPs.
Even when a large number of berths are shown as available a senior citizen or a divyangjan is invariably allotted an upper berth by the passenger reservation system of railways.
All suggestions to improve this system have fallen on deaf ears.
It was suggested that while booking a ticket a person may be issued a confirmed ticket with CNF against his name. The berths should be allotted at the time of preparation of Reservation Chart taking in to account factors like family, senior citizen, pregnant woman, divyangjan and VVIP.
The details of coach and berths can be informed to passengers by SMS as practically everyone uses a mobile phone. Others can check coach number and berth number from Reservation Chart displayed on the platform or TTE.
Railways may prepare Reservation Chart 6 hours prior to departure of train. more

My opinion about RAC is that it should be abolished. I wrote about is long back. RAC is nothing but legal loot by IR. A passenger is made to pay full fare but doesn't know whether he/she will get full berth or has to share it with someone else. For short journey during day it is okay but night journey is a torture if a separate berth is not available. more  
Very aptly said Mr.Pande . When opting for the Lower Berth , the availability should be clearly displayed yes/no . IF WAITLISTED TICKET IS ALOWED TO BE BOOKED THEN THE RAILWAYS SHOULD MAKE SURE TO GIVE THE LOWER BERTH . more  
Present system is doing well. It is only when govt. has some hidden agenda then it becomes headache as it happened with me during month of March. I had a confirmed ticket of 19th March and I cancelled it to extend my stay for 10 days. During 1st and 2nd week of March I tried to book my ticket 5 times, 3 times I had my account debited but ticket not issued and 2 time amount not deducted and not ticket. On 22nd March PM announced Lockdown. Definitely Railways had prior information. As far as lower berth for senior citizen, please note that while making enquiry online there is option under quota at top right corner. It shows availability of lower berth under Senior Citizen Quota. While booking one has to mention it on booking format that a passenger is senior citizen. There are many more option on booking format regarding issue/booking of ticket. Please go through booking format carefully. more  
Current system is good. The only change we need is to instruct computor to give less priority to politicians and bueaurocrats in seat allotment. They all may be given RAC more
