JALLIKATTU - WAY FORWARD

Now Jallikattu is legal and the obstacle removed for this Tamil tradition. One of the purpose in revoking the ban is the preservation & augumentation of the native breed of bulls and thereby increase the population of native breeds or cross breeds. But it is a fact that the quantity of milk yield from these native breeds are unviable economically, though it may be healthy. To rear these native bulls only for Jallikattu one time in a year, therefore, may not have any purpose except for tradition and sentiment. The quantity of milk yield by the native cows is only 1/6 th of Jersey cows. In view of this, the dairy industry will promote only the Imported breeds. How do we address the problem to make it economically viable. Will any co-operative type of collection and distribution of milk help with lesser cost?. Can the group pool in their ideas? more

native breeds can be given better feeds & mineral supplements along with calcium injection when these things are given regularly the quantity of milk will increase then when the cow calves & when it become cows it will yield higher quantity of milk same procedure should be followed for all native breeds & non - descript cows & then cross breeding with the high potential milk yielding cows like GIR , SAHIWAL breeds semen can be used the only problem with this dairy industry that is utmost care should be taken in implementing this concept any body can do this in consultation with dairy veterinarian i am a veterinary doctor employed in AAVIN . it is surprising to note the awareness shock wave created by jallikattu in terms of significance of native breeds in maintining our health through milk waw !!!!!! bulls vigour triggers health conscious more
There are good breeds available. Many extincted. Better to preserve existing breeds. Good quality breeds can yield sufficient milk and good quality. Maintaining is economically viable as requirements of bulls will be more when domestic production of milk increases with more Indian cows. They can have indirect income like maintaining cows, sale of milk, use of cow dung, cow urine etc. What required is change of mindset in the people to support Indian products more
What I have understood about Jallikattu is, its a bull sport. Bulls' vigor / endurance is tested for better cross breeding. Those cows can yield healthy and voluminous milk. VET Departments should avoid artificial insemination . In most of our Cattle farms in Tamil Nadu only Jersey breeds are more in number. Local breeds are either rarely seen or we don't find them at all more
Is it necessary to expose the bulls to jallikattu to produce a good yield of milk? The sport will enhance the price of the bull and make it commercially possible to breed them . Please enlighten me. more
One of my late lamented friends who was an agronomist informed us in a meeting of The Madras Naturalists' Society that there is a small Indian breed of cow that is superior to the Jersey cow in milk yield. Also now there are more Ongole cattle in Texas than in India. We have been running after foreign breeds mindlessly just like we have been planting exotic trees in our roadsides that were all brought down by the cyclone Vardhal And yet there is a huge advertisement in Times of India requesting public participation in enhancing the green cover by once again planting gulmohr, rain trees etc. all of South American origin. Several gundumani trees have been planted by some NGO in our colony where the branches keep falling and roots are causing cracks in our residences. And yet the authorities turn a blind eye. There are none so blind as those that WILL NOT see! L.Kalavathi Retd. Bank Official Chennai, TAmilnadu, India 26th Jan 2017 more
