IRCTC Service Charges on Railway Ticket Booking through internet
There are invariably long queues in front of Railway Reservation Counters. It takes sufficiently long time for getting a ticket booked. Lot of money is required to open more counters to take care of the long queues. This is despite the fact that a large number of residents make use of internet to book tickets online without going to a reservation counter. If these residents start going to reservation counters for booking, the situation will lead to chaos. They, thus, are helping the reservation system. They are also saving a lot of money which Indian Railways may have to spend to open additional counters.
Instead of appreciating these residents, Indian Railways charges IRCTC Service Charge from the persons who resort to Internet Booking online mode. The amount being charged is significantly high. For example for a ticket costing Rs.600, the ITCTC Service Charge is Rs.45.60. In addition the resident has to pay to bank also to the tune of Rs.11.60. The total additional charge, therefore, works out to Rs.57 on a ticket of Rs.600. This is very high cost. Particularly so when they are trying to help the system by easing the crowds on counters.
In order to encourage more and more use of internet reservation, it is desirable that this IRCTC Service Charge should be abolished. more

Ministry of Railway stop this useless drama.... 90% railway employees do not report on duty.. they pay bribe to supervisor and get the salary without doing any work.. 1st of all put all such employees in Jail and forfeit their all property and recover the salary paid to them... !!! more

Valid point. Some companies provide discount for on line payment for internet bill, mobile bills, credit card payment, on line booking of flight tickets. By doing so, the operating cost can be brought down considerably in due course of time. The cost of opening and maintaining a reservation counter is very high and which add to the per km operating cost of running train. Train fare is not cheap, if you compare the air fare and air time . Air fare from Kolkata to Delhi is Rs.4500-5000. Journey duration is exactly 2 hrs . Rajdhani fare for Kolkata to Delhi is Rs.2800+ (for AC 2 tier) and journey time is more than 18 hrs. more
