How to generate more income to railways? These are few suggestions:-

1. Involve private security companies for validating tickets at few major stations on a pilot basis, install CCTV cameras(they should be made responsible for it's working) at all exit / entry gates.
2. At least 5 personnel(3 males + 2 females) should be available in all gates at any given point of time.
3. Keep extra personnel to deal with people who do not have a ticket - a separate room should be allocated with a panel who will impose penalty in flat 1-2 hours under CCTV surveillance, give receipt to all.
4. Make Platform tickets and General Class tickets availability online with date and time on it - this will allow people to get it easily, many people avoid taking because of long ques.
5. Tickets should be validated in General Compartments as well.
6. Add more Chair Car coaches(Non-Ac) and AC to let people have allotted seat, if possible introduce Double Decker chair car coaches for allowing more people to travel with allotted seat.
7. Make platform tickets valid for 2 hours only - penalize while they exit the station with 10 Rs for every extra hour, this will ensure required people are in stations and are using station facilities - this would mean, less noise, less litter, less nuisance, most importantly less people on platform which means, all passengers can move around easily.
8. Involve private firms to check passengers who violate luggage norms, usually 7 out of 10 people carry more than permissible weight of luggage, penalize them - this will generate additional income or discourage passengers from carrying more luggage which would help all passengers travel comfortably. more

The profits for railways always is in goods transport. In order to generate more income from that Railways should be considering the Roll on Roll off method in all possible routes. That would provide speed and convenience to the transporters and income for the railways not to speak of the foreign exchange and energy savings the country will be getting more
No extra person should be allowed at railway platform scrap railway platform ticket and implement the arrangement like Airport for departure and Arrival. It would certainly keep platform crowd free, liter free and actual passengers will be able to take benefits of facilities available on platform. Parking space will be available to many. Tickets should be sold only 7 days prior to Train schedule and ticket sold should be Non-refundable. there should be set % percentage of ticket booking for online and at ticket counter. Ticket booked on online should have PAN/ADHAAR NUMBER of treveller printed on it. Ticket booked at ticket counter must have photograph of treveller. if anyone wants to book tickets well in advance then travellers has to bear special charges for the ticket reservation. scrap RAC and waiting list ticket system. more
Further to Mr. S. Gudhla's suggestions, a) I also feel that we should control the vendors on the Railway Platforms. We should check the quality and the price of their vending items. b) We should keep an eye on the process of Goods Booking for transportation. We may get more revenue by proper control. more
