Food Safety in Tamil Nadu - Inputs Sought

FSSAI (The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ) has a Food Safety circle available via -
http://bit.ly/foodsafety-community

We would like to seek your inputs on what are the various issues you see in regards to food safety in your city in Tamil Nadu. These could be in regards to artificial ripening, packaged food, food product itself, restaurant hygiene levels, street food, adulteration, etc.

We would also look at how district food safety officials can be given access to the circle followed by a city level food safety/consumer circle in your city.

We look forward to your inputs! more

It is a big subject concerning the health of the multitudes of Chennai City including children and elsewhere. 1) It is Mango season beginning Feb. end. In none of the stores including Koyambedu will you get naturally ripe mango. It is all calcium carbide the which affects the intestines and can cause cancer. 2) Banana - Hormone sprayed and ripened. Sappotta (chikku) again calcium carbide used for ripening. Jack fruit some thing is injected for ripening. Papaya under normal circumstances it takes about a week to make an organic Papaya ripen naturally. What do you get in the market is undoubtedly artificially ripened. Sometime back news was abuzz that Watermelon is injected with some chemical to give it the bright red color. All apples reach Chennai retail outlets duly coated with paraffin for increasing the shelf-life. This is only a few examples. We are the reason, in a way , for encouraging the dubious activity. We ask the shop keeper for ripe fruit and he "somehow" ripen and give for he has to satisfy the customer. We have no patience to wait. If all the buyers demand, raw fruits and prepared to wait for naturally ripe fruits, that is the solution. Deterrents by Corporation authorities very very frequently will also instill a fear in the sellers the which they are not doing, FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. The pocket, not stomach, also needs filling. more
Large scale ADULTERATION is going on in ERODE< SALEM areas, the food safety people must ACT more
Some department stores are selling artificially ripened fruits like mango and papaya. Will the food safety officials take action on a complaint? If so whom to report to? more
I agree with that. Another biggest problem we pose is hot food particles like gravy are packed in thin plastic covers and kept for 2-3 hours before we purchase. What measures are we going to take because this is highly hazardous and harmful to the consumers. more
stop the plastic covers... and making the place dirty by throwing it on the road. A place should have proper waste management & drainage and water facilities. Should stop using pavement as their eateries.. Pls make them use the space which they are allotted for not the public pavement as their serving place... and ban all TASMAC eat outs.. un hygenic condition and food has been served there. BAN all the adultereated food if they have been proved it is adultereated and it should be punishable.-without the political influence and competitors influence. And their names should be put in the food safety sites as adulterators.. more
