Farmers should avoid violence

Traditionally, farming community have always been held in high esteem in India. Therefore, if the farmers would feel distressed, the Indian society feel concerned and want such distress conditions to be removed as early as possible.

In the last few months, farming community have become very vocal in India and have resorted to agitations on one count or another.

Distress due to different reasons :

In some states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, many farmers have suffered during last one year due to drought conditions and consequent fall in crop output. In other regions like Maharashtra and Telangana, farmers are distressed due to surplus crop production and consequent crashing of prices in the market.

Both are genuine issues and it is the duty of the country to help the farmers in such scenario.

Types of farmers :

There are different types of people involved in agricultural operations and all of them claim that they are farmers. The question is whether all of them are justified in claiming themselves as farmers.

One section of people have agricultural land in rural areas but they live in far away places engaged in some other profession and they lease out the land. They also call themselves as farmers.

Another section live near the agricultural land they hold but never get into the land to plough or cultivate but engage workmen to do the physical labour and pay them wages. They also call themselves as farmers.

Another section hold small area of land and physically work on the land themselves. They are genuine farmers.

Fourth section of people do not hold any land but work on the agricultural field on daily wages basis. They are tillers and economically most distressed . The three classes of people described above do not recognize these tillers as farmers.

The most affected lot during the distress conditions in agricultural operations are the tillers (agricultural workers) who are left high and dry.

Benefits for farmers :

The government has initiated number of schemes such as crop insurance, soil health card e marketing of agri products, kisan credit card scheme to avail quick loan etc. No doubt, the farmers are given considerable benefits by the government such as free electricity, exemption from income tax etc. There is no distinction made in providing such benefits to the large , medium and small scale farmers.
However, it appears that such schemes are not giving adequate relief to the farming community.

Demand for loan waiver :

While the government has given number of relief to the farmers, the major demand of the farmers now is that the entire agricultural loan should be waived all over the country. The government and the banks find it difficult to do so as it would cause distress situation for the banks and severely affect the finances of the government. But, the farmers do not seem to care about the problems of the government and the banks.

Nevertheless, several state governments have waived agricultural loan availed by the farmers partly and in some states fully in recent years, inspite of the deficit scenario that the government will face. Such waiver of loan inevitably would affect the ability of the government and banks to implement development projects and introduce welfare measures for the poor people.

Now, the question is that while distress in agricultural operations do cause serious problems to the farmers resulting in default of loans, even in the non distress period , many farmers default on loan repayment due to many reasons including their indiscipline in personal and family finance management. Violently agitating farmers seem to ignore this view.

Violent agitation not appropriate :

In any case, it is not appropriate that farmers should engage themselves in violent protests like stoning transport buses and blocking roads and rails or unseemly protests like eating rat or undressing themselves in public.

Such behavior of agitating farmers are causing harm to the good will enjoyed by them so far and many discerning observers wonder whether the farmers should resort to such extreme form of protests . Many people are also wondering whether these agitators are really the hard working farmers or some people with vested interests whose goal may not be farmers’ welfare alone.

There is no doubt that conscience of the nation feel disturbed when farmers are in distress. But, farmers should realize that such violent form or unseemly agitations do not help their cause.

It is always seen that some of the so called leaders of agricultural groups talk and behave more like politicians these days than like farmers.

Common men in the country are noting this.

The farmers need to realize that there are many people who are not involved in agricultural operations but in several other areas who are equally distressed. If everyone start violent agitations, where would such conditions end up ?

MP cops thrash 80-year-old woman for sheltering protesters during farmers' stir An 80-year-old woman in Bhopal has alleged that a group of four-five policemen barged into her house and beat her with sticks, breaking her bones and grievously injuring her husband too. The policemen came to her house while chasing agitators who had disrupted a rally in nearby Phanda Kalan village near Sehore, as they ran through her compound. When the boys outran the cops, they turned to Kamlabai (80) and said, "You are one of them, you ordered that trucks be set ablaze." After beating Kamlabai, her husband and sons, the cops arrested her grandsons along with Kamlabai herself. "India Today". Sitting in metropolitan city and comments favoring ruling party is easy, but ruling parties always doing crush the people protesting for their rights. Its very ashamed to see chief minister of Madhyapradesh, conducting fasting protest, after killing innocent farmers by putting order to firing. I want to ask one who support Mr.Modi, Why he is against forming "Kaveri Melanmai Vaariyam" after Supreme Court insist. more
Government sanctions different loans to farmers from the funds raised by the tax money paid by others If the loans are written off it has to be at the expenses of the bone fide tax payer but the tax payer is not given any concession or benefit. The so called farmers are not tax payers. When there is a bumper crop and the farmers earn heavily, will they pay a part of their profit to the government.A sizable portion of the so called farmers, is politicians and those own large extend of lands and other wealth. They are the leaders of the agitation. Repayment can be postponed and interests can be waived but the demand for writing off the all the loans to all farmers in unfair and the agitations on that score cannot be sympathised. Will similar agitations by business people who suffer losses will be enrtained by the common man? more
farmers must first realise that all these agitators are not farmers or their well wishes they are millioners behind the mass and no farmer is ready to face all these violence .If they self assess they will realise how much money is spent for these agitation and who is spending for theses? will any genuine farmers who work in the filed go to this extreme they have more worried hoe to earn and take care of their family . Has any one farmer is able to go for a one day picnic with their family ?no they have more priority for their daily food, child education even a pencil they count the coin and buy till date. more
I entirely agree with Mr. Venkatraman's views on present Farmers issues spreading all across India. Both draught and good produce seems to be a problem. While some farmers community want loan waiver some others want better price for their produce. Govt should immediately take notice and find solutions in each state. They should do this fast and not sit on it which lead's to frustration and force farmers to come on the streets.

Having said that , there is absolutely no justification for violence on the streets and burning public property. I remember Kerala High court some time ago ordered the people who indulged in violence should pay of the damages.

We need to have a Law which will make the Govt of the day , the ruling party and the Bureaucracy in charge of Law & Order and ofcourse the perpetrators of violence to pay for the damages. more
Just compare Industrial Houses and their owners and the workers working under them. The
Benifits given by the Govt , Does it reach the Industry workers?
Why are you discriminating the Farmer community whether they are small or big land owners or they work in the farm? They are all instrumental in providing food for all humans including some animals in this country. But we want to divide that Agricultural section of the population which is under tremendous stress due to the policies of successive Govts and have lost their livelihood due to the vast acquisitions for other purposes without even giving the landless their legitimate compensation or provide them with alternative jobs, thereby losing their status and also their income and have become laughing stock for people like you.
Some have been branded as Naxals and Maoists by the Administration
for Protesting the unreasonable takeover and Compensations provided.
Pl dont demean the people who still have their Agricultural lands inspite of heavy losses and are maintaining the land on the hope that one day this fast moving world will realise the potential of Agriculturists and the food revolution they can provide to this country.

Yes while farmers deserve special considerations like tax waiver, loan waiver, subsidies for electricity, fertilisers, buying their products at favourable rates, etc. they should not allow defeated politicians, anti social elements, Goondas to take over their protests ! these elements only spoil the farmers' name and block the help being tendered by the government. Many politicians own agricultural lands just for the purpose of tax evasion and to avail loan waiver ! They r not real farmers. these agr land owners who r not farmers, shd be identified and the Govt shd redistribute to the real farmers. Then only the Goondas' activities can be eliminated! more
How many of you know that people like Ambanis also claim as farmers to evade the tax and the Govt support them. Mr. NSV classifies the farmers category leaving these people. O.K. Does he know the net losers among them. His justification for the last category is not at all true. They anyhow get the wages for their work. But the other categories of farmers are the real losers. It is the lender's duty to identify the eligible farmers before lending. But they are very eager to lend more money to achieve their target. So please dont write wrong concepts. Here I want to say the presence of forum for the protection of credit card defaulters and the court ruling against the use of muscle power against them. But for farmers? It is left to you guys more
Cultural terrorism has peeped in Tamilnadu farmer's agitations.the farmers shown in TV are like fat cats including a woman and no viewer pity them .They look like armature actors. In fact they seems to be eating well.when the whole country is under drought who is to be blamed.Farmers are one part of the Indian society. I agree." It was a politically motivated show. Govt should extend all the support to the worker farmer - Nobody will contest but, should also bring these "Top 20% farmers" into the Tax bracket and establish their own equity. " more
