DO STREET DEMONSTRATIONS REFLECT PUBLIC OPINION ?

Recently, I happened to see a demonstration organized by an activist group, where much less than 100 persons were present. However, next day I was shocked to see the photograph of the demonstration in the media where the photograph made it look that hundreds of persons have demonstrated. Section of media also stated that large gathering was there in the demonstration.

There are around 7 crore people in Tamil Nadu and very very few people participate in these demonstrations. Even in the case of government staff or bank staff or teachers, only a few people demonstrate on the street and many of them stay indoor perhaps, enjoying the “holiday”.

In some cases, it is also said that the demonstrators leave the place after the media photographers leave.

It is naïve to think that these street demonstrations reflect public opinion. Most of the people silently and helplessly watch as the demonstrators block the roads or stone the buses.

Are we getting into a state of mob rule where a few politicians and activists are the main players.

These days most of the news and photos are fake (digitally altered).it's become very difficult to know which is genuine.... anyways you are right that majority of public are silent spectators and sufferers..... unfortunately our people are very docile and will not come in streets even for most disturbing matter unlike in other countries where such people power is very evident.... more
