Discussion # 1 - Key Railway Issues affecting citizens

Friends,

Following an approach similar to the Transform India circle, we will conduct Railway specific discussions in this circle.

Using this platform, we would like to prepare action oriented recommendations for the Railway Ministry and submit to them on a monthly basis.

As a first, let us focus on top 5 issues that if addressed would make the Railway journey more pleasant for the traveler.

Please outline the top 5 issues you would like to see addressed by Sunday, July 20th. Once complete, we will focus on Root causes and Solutions.

Thanks,

Rajendra Patap Gupta more

Security from thefts is one of the most important issue on trains. Recently, Mumbai Delhi Rajdhani was in news for three consecutive days because thieves had been active on it. Even my wife was a victim when we were travelling by Bangalore Rajdhani, coming to Delhi on 16th July. On that day, 12-13 persons were affected. All had reported to GRP at Nizamuddin station. Should Railways not have taken prompt action? Rail Ministry had told the Parliamentary Committee in 2013 that all important trains are given RPF security. IT IS A BLATANT LIE. more
The important factor like safety has to be secured with getting revenue out of the service. .for this it should be taken care that no one should be allowed in the railway station platform unless he has tickets to get into train. This will help in safety and revenue to stop people traveling without fair... more

Top action items: 1. Safety 2. Cleanliness 3. Identify and plug leakages of revenue 4. Modern look and feel for coaches (old style windows/toilets in trains etc. are issues) 5. Option to book network of trains for start station to end station booking including booking of air tickets/bus tickets for bridging 6. Training and empowerment of staff for drastic improvement in service quality 7. Matching demand and supply of trains for all routes. Track metrics on the utilization ratio, waiting list size for various trains routewise for all classes 8. Monetizing of advertisement space on trains 9. Improve wages for the staff to meet their expectations on standard of living 10. Provide toilets on all platforms 11. Entry barriers for beggars, tress passers, Animals more
Following steps would help pit railway back on track and in that order. 1) Stop cross subsidizing passenger fare by loading it on to freight. 2) Ensure safety of tracks and passengers, especially the ladies. 3) Introduce more trains so that there is no rush that leads to touts offering tickets on the sly. 4) Encourage cleanliness on both platform and within the compartments 5) Make the train compartments more spacious. The cramming of passengers in three layers, like goats being carried in trucks, is not something to be proud of, neither does it render it easy to keep the trains clean. 6) Make taxis, Auto rickshaws and other means of transport operating from station prepaid with fixed tariff so that passengers are not ripped. 7) Provide rating and information including locality and tariff of safe hotels beginning from the lowest to the star accommodation public on the platforms and keep flyers accessible to passengers so that when in strange cities they are not robbed or otherwise exploited. 8) Provide armed guards in each of the coach which should also have one attendant so that both the safety of passengers and their luggage be ensured. 9) Provide doors that close once train leaves the station and open only when it reaches another station where it is supposed to stop. 10) Provide some sound alarm that can be activated in case of emergency or a cell number where complaint can be lodged to persons within the train and attended immediately and not when it reaches next station. more
