Cleanliness in Railways and HT article

Dear Friends,

In a recently conducted poll in the Railways circle, 50% of you had voted that the no. 1 priority for Railways should be Cleanliness.

The whitepaper on Improving Cleanliness in Railways is being submitted to the Railway Minister and Minister of State for Railways for taking the recommended actions. You can find it at:

Also, this morning Hindustan Times has presented the work we have been doing in this circle to their readership. We thank them for creating awareness about our initiative. The article" Making Railways Better portal a big hit" is available at:

The size of the dust bin provided in the trains is not enough to accommodate the generation of trash. In the process, the passengers keep on dumping the trash on the tracks. Even the on board cleaning staff are collecting and dumping the same on the tracks. This is not done. more
I recently traveled in Delhi Guwahati Rajdhani Train. I obsereved that the pantry staff themselves keep the garbage on the way between two coaches. I had not seen the garbage bin which generally is placed near the vestibule to throw the paper glasses, paper packets, alluminium foils and trays and other items which they collect from the coach after passenger had their break fast, lunch or dinner. Secondally it is very sad that no provision of seperate enclosure for arranging trays for serving food items to the passengers and it is arranged near the toilets and wash basins which is very unhyegenic as people keep coming and going now and then and some times it was observed that they pack breads etc. in the packets sitting on the thorougfare. Railways should think about it and make proper arrangement in each coach for arranging food trays in a hyegenic conditions more
Dear Sir, Apart from cleanliness, the current Railway Minister should ensure that we provide very decent infrastructure at all railway stations in India's cities ans towns. The following may be noted: *1.SKY-WALKS- *Many important rail stations in India do not have sky-walk for passengers to access the road on the other side of the terminal.A case in point is the YESHWANTPUR railway station which has pathetic infrastructure though it is an important sub-urban railway station attached to Bangalore central station. This Yeshwantpur railway opens on the Bangalore-Pune national highway but huge number of the passengers cross this road manually with their luggage to reach the other side of the road. A sky walk should be installed in such cases to ensure safety passengers and t ensure road traffic on highway is not interrupted by police to enable people t cross the road. *2.ROOF FOR RAIN PROTECTION-* All B grade and below stations dont have roof over all platforms and in many cases the roof covers only part of the platform and 40% of platform length where bogies stand (when trains arrive) dont have roof. This make life difficult for passengers during the rainy seasons. *3.Adequate parking*:Our metro and quasi metro stations dont have basic facility for parking where by cars and two wheelers can be parked without much effort.Often vehicles are shoved into narrow gaps available between 2 vehicles.Indian Railways should innovatively plan to buy available land for making parking bays and also keeping them clean *4.Avoiding chaos during :* All major stations should have proper infrastructure facility to avoid easy drainage of rain water without leading to "pools of water in front of railway stations".We should build good water drainage infrastructure in and around a radius of one kilometere from all major stations. This will lead to convenience fr passengers not t be held up during rainy seasons especially for long distance travellers. *5.Smooth roads stations leading to major railways with no bottlenecks : * In line with PM Sir's vision to make our railway stations as modern as airports, the Railway Minister should take steps to have smooth brad roads with proper lane and zebra-markings within a radius of at-least 1 km within the radius of all major railway stations ( city and town level) with proper infrastructure for the handling the rainy season. Lets us take these small baby steps towards making train journey more convenient for the common man. Replies are welcome P Srinivas more
I saw a welcome change in Hyd-Pune shatabdi express in my recent visit. The coaches were new and very clean. Including the toilets. and yes, people were using the dust bins. The guys wiped the coach clean once, I also saw there was a onboard plumber who fitted the leak in the toilet I feel, the change is happening, A bit slowly though ! more
How many of us throw the packing of food items and plastic bottles etc in the bins only? We all suggest many ways but first and foremost we have to discipline ourselves. "Practice before you preach!" Then deterrent punishment/fines for non compliance will go a long way in improving things, particularly for the people who can afford. I am referring to the AC class travelers. Also display prominently the quantum of fine and enforce it. We indians observe the cleanliness norms in other countries only because of this. more
