Govt wants access to aggregate data of citizens held with private companies

Many of you know LocalCircles, based on feedback of entrepreneurs on the platform raised the issue about Government not having full access to anonymised data of citizens shared by them with businesses. Yesterday, the Government has circulated the personal data protection bill to MPs which states that the "Government may direct any business to provide anonymised personal and non-personal data to the Government to target delivery of services or for policies etc.

We believe that the Government should be able to ask businesses for such aggregate data only in the case of a law/order/investigation situation but should not have open access as it can lead to potential misuse of various kinds including favouring of certain businesses over others, understanding voter bases better, etc.

We would like to seek your inputs and then escalate this to the parliamentarians as well as Government officials and leadership. more

Personal Data & Profile are personal in nature and should be protected. more
Big brother attitude of the government is always dangerous to democracy. Hope government will see the logic and seek information only when required with legal advise. Executive always like to have more powers but the political leadership should restrain them. more
Primafacie a case filed irrespective of the case, they cannot contest elections. Once the Court pronounces judgement, if acquitted after an years gap can contest. If punished, till their lifetime barred to participate in elections and also party membership. Even presently members on bail should be barred from holding the post of MLA, MP. Further a candidate can contest from one constituency only more
There should be personal data protection of the consumers. more
Since personal data of citizens is already avaible with many Govt.
institutions/private entities, the Govt. should get access to the same
in the interest of people and other security related issues. After all the
Govt. is by the people and for the people. I don't think the Govt. will
misuse the data as there is well established mechanism to collect and use
the same. more
