Actions from Railway Ministry on Safety front

Friends,

Safety was highlighted as a second most important area in our circle poll on Railway needs and in our whitepaper to Railways Ministry.

It is good to see that the Railway Ministry is acting on this front. Railways is installing a state-of-the-art system along the sides of tracks for detection of faults and defective parts in coaches, wagons and locomotives. These systems can check the health of wheels, brake discs and bearings at full running speed of the train and thus increase operational safety and reliability by flagging unsafe conditions well in time.

Please see below for more details.

Thanks to everyone for playing an active role in Making Railways Better!

I agree with give more attention on security of passengers.Railway may adopt new signal system for avoid accident. more
While booking the ticket, all seats are full, no waitlist also. Then taken Tatkal ticket. But at the time of travelling, we surprised that coach is 50 % seat balance for passengers and no TTC came in that compartment for checking the same and give the seats for required passengers. more
I too agree with Mr. Surendra more
1. Having interacted with and taught senior Railway officials over last 10 years, I feel the biggest challenge is to change the mindset and create a mentality and work culture that facilitates and promotes customer based operations with economic viability of railways as the main objective. In my experience, continued huge subsidies and resulting politicization breeds and hides railway inefficiencies. 2. In last several years expenses have been running closer to 95-98% of revenues (120,000 crores annual revenue) compared to only about 80-85% in 2008 leaving little surplus for doing anything. Most , if not all, of increase in expenses is due to increasing inefficiency and wasteful use of resources. Even 1% reduction in operating expenses each year will save tax payers more than 1,000 crores. We must ask Railways to do everything possible to cut waste, fraud and abuse of resources and I am disappointed that latest budget had very little to say about it. 3. Currently passenger business is incurring annual losses of more than 20,000 crores which is being subsidized by higher freight rates resulting in higher inflation. Ticket prices should reflect cost as best as possible and curtailing current annual loss of 10,000 crores (approximate) in ticket less travel will go a long way to improve railways. 4. As airline and bus companies don't build planes or buses, I don't see why railways should make its own locomotives, compartments, wagons etc.. I was hoping that in the recent budget BJP government will start the process of divesting these entities, releasing around 30,000 -40,000 crores (my estimate) and create a competitive markets in rolling stock needed by railways... a practice followed all over the world. 5. We should make existing passenger services more efficient by making trains safer, run at a higher speed (around 160 km an hour) and installing customer focused approach. Spending between 100-200 crores to build one kilometer of high speed rail is wasteful ( a white elephant, in my opinion that we can ill afford) and it is doubtful that passenger will pay 4-5 times of current fares (AC sleeper first class) to reduce travel time marginally. Let us not repeat the mistake of Concorde passenger jet liner which UK, France and Spain had to jettison after wasting billions of dollars. more
Nothing to do with Safety, but a cost saving exercise. Railways should use train roof tops for fitting Solar Panels and use the power for Lights and Fans. more
