Rain water harvesting in Karnataka
Bengaluru gets 45 -60 days rain in a year. If government makes stringent laws and ensures rain water is harvested by both people and local bodies, no need to get water from far away districts spending thousands of crores. Need a vision and citizen participation.

More important than government orders is citizen participation. In our campus, we have done rain water harvesting, thereby reviving our dry borewells. We have saved Rs 4 lakhs from our water bill. more

Rainwater harvesting, more specifically roof water harvesting is indeed the need of the hour in urban areas. However, looking to the Govt. for this noble effort is self-deception. It has to be a citizen driven exercise if results are to be achieved. Also, recharge structures should not come near polluting sources such as petrol pumps, chemical industries etc. as otherwise you will pollute groundwater. The best way forward is to have local communities such as a street based units to drive the movement. From the experience in Chennai, let me make it clear that no amount of Govt enforcement will ever succeed. Happy harvesting. more

The present RWH pits that are mandatory serve little purpose for the following reasons. 1, The water that is meant to recharge the ground may be hard to recover. 2.Much of this water may overflow and be lost in the drains. 3.Many residences can afford sufficient set back space and even that space have sanitary pipes running to make pits a viable option. We, as Architects have been insisting on an elevated water tank that collects rainwater and feeds the toilets. We have been doing so for 20 odd years and its efficiency is proven. Has Govt. or the citizens ever thought whether whitetopping of so many roads will help water conservation or not? Water percolates into the earth through asphalted roads and not those with whitetopping or concrete roads. Govt. on one hand talks of water conservation and on the other takes up schemes to the contrary. One lake in the vicinity can charge any number of wells and borewells. How many lakes have we lost and how many are safeguarded? more
