Very Bad, Traffic police need better training.
Traffic police is good in blowing whistle only.
Public crossing road even when signal is RED. They must be fine even Rs.10.
Motorcycle are the worst on road.
The Traffic Management is going from bad to worse. The points mentioned by Mr. Subba Rao Perla are absolutely correct.
The fundamental problem cannot be solved by INCREASING THE FINES and implementation in Fits & Starts.
The dept's DO NOT HAVE CORRECT IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES. The MAIN TARGET BEING ONLY FOR A SHOW OF STATISTICAL FIGURES OF OFFENDERS & COLLECTION OF FINES ( WHICH ALSO LENDS ITSELF FOR CORRUPTION )
1 ) The implementation of ON THE ROAD FINING , INVARIABLY BLOCKS & CREATES HAVOC ON THE TRAFFIC FLOW.
2 ) The Traffic Dept. is EITHER FULLY IGNORANT or TURNS A BLIND EYE TO BASIC TRAFFIC RULES.
a ) RIGHT TURNS ON MAIN ROAD AGAINST PEAK HOUR TRAFFIC is allowed which IS EXTREMELY BAD MANAGEMENT
CONSIDERING THAT SUCH A PROVISION EXISTS RIGHT ON THE DOORSTEP OF MUMBAI RTO on TARDEO RD.
b ) MULTIPLE TOWING ( LITERALLY CARRIAGE ) OF SMALL TWO WHEELERS ( IS THE TOWING VEHICLE LICENSED TO DO THIS ? )
IS DONE WHILE HEAVY VEHICLES , WATER TANKERS ( WHICH ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO GET FILLED ON THE ROAD ) &
PVT. BUSSES DO A ROARING BUSINESS WITH IMPUNITY FROM THE SAME SPOTS.
c ) CORNER PARKING IS NOT ALLOWED TO ENABLE TURING VEHICLE DRIVERS TO GET CLEAR VIEW ON THE TURN. HOWEVER
THE TAXI FAVORITE OPERATING SPOT IS THE CORNER. ALSO IN MANY PLACES TRAFFIC ISLANDS BLOCK THE TURN VIEW.
d) THE TOPPING OF THE CAKE :
When objection to the traffic police in charge is made they simply state " WE DONT HAVE FACILITY TO TOW HEAVY
VEHICLES.! "
When jumping of RED signal on pedestrian crossing was brought to the Notice of the Traffic Personel in charge ( about
Three together incl. a motorcycle cop ) the straight faced reply was " HOW MANY POINTS CAN MONITOR ? "
On being told that their lax attitude was one of the main reasons that offenders have taken to attack them with impunity ,
the answer was " YOU ARE ALSO ONE OF SUCH PERSONS WHO WOULD ATTACK US. ! "
From the above it seems that the EXECUTORS OF LAW are NOW instead of being PUBLIC SERVANTS ( PLEASE PARDON THE USAGE ) ARE CONSIDERING THEMSELVES AS "THE LAW " & maybe " BEYOND LAW "

As regards the actual Traffic management, many systems were tried out on basis of Foreign Experts Analysis which failed for several reasons. The main point missed out was that OUR HAPHAZARD TRAFFIC & ROAD PATTERNS were ALIEN to the experts & only a very expensive dynamic intelligent real time monitoring / analysis system could provide any reasonable success, Not to mention our Climate & Maintainence required. I had ages ago stated the fallacy via the then existing newspaper forum and suggested a semi automatic implementation with manual walkie talkie monitoring. Incidentally this system is being invariably used whenever any VIP is using the road. Why Not on a regular basis ? Now that we have advanced communication systems. Another method would be to plan routing peak hour traffic on arterial roads in packets , so that the traffic packet could move from important predefined locations at pt. A to pt. B with more speed without stopping & reduce congestion. Desiring users could be notified by Mobile SMS regarding the route , scheduling to take advantge.
Traffic Management in the city is really below par. Look around and one can see sheer indiscipline in the driving habits of citizens and flagrant violation of traffic rules. Honking, jumping signals, cutting across lanes, talking on mobile phones, irregular parking.....and the list is just endless. And why are the traffic cops always in groups at certain places. And why do they stand at the signals ? this really beats me. They should be at places which are potential bottlenecks and ease the flow of traffic there. And for goodness sake, they really need to get tough with the violators of the traffic rules. Otherwise, the message that is being given to the public at large is that they can do what they please and place their trust in the Almighty when they are on the roads.
Mumbai Police were the best and elite force in the country at one time. It had started deteriorating but now things are not so bad taking into account the daily influx of people.
Constables try their best to control traffic but I blame the drivers and riders for careless driving and riding also.

Traffic signals and timings need to be improved.

Recently the department is getting better with the constables and officers standing on many junctions for faults like without helmate signal jumping.
