Tax Demand letter for 2011-12

My husband has got a tax demand letter from income tax authority. They say we owe 4.5L in taxes for 1 of the years. Is there a way to get this addressed electronically. My husband was in a job and we paid all the taxes so there is simply a credit error somewhere. more

Thanks all. Will advise as we go through the process. You all and these circles are superb resources and companion. more
Dear Shikha, Your husband has to log in the income tax site and access his account. There he has to find out the tax demand under 'action pending against me'. Thus he will be able to know to which year the demand pertain to. Then he has to approach his then office's Drawing and Disbursing Officer, the authority which deducted his tax in that year. He can request that authority to set right the error in crediting the tax in your husband's account. Apparently there was a mistake in mentioning his PAN number while crediting the deducted tax to income tax authorities. more
These matters can be solved electronically only if you have filed the returns electronically. Else you can send the reply u/s 154 by registered post with ack to the particular person of IT who has signed the letter received by you. And he shall correct it. I did it and he has done it. more
despite filling rectification return within 9 months yet assessment order does not account for all the taxes paid. more
You can also file application for amendment u/s 154 online more
