Real Price of Quality Apparels

Today I met an exporter of garments who is in the extended family and i was shocked to hear price of garments at which Indian manifacturers are giving products to Indian brands (with their logos embossed)

Full Shirt - 250 rupees
Trousers - 450 rupees
Waistcoat - 600 rupees
Polo Shirt - 250 rupees
Skirt - 300 rupees
Pyjamas - 250 rupees

So next time you shop online dont get carried away with 50% discount on MRP. The MRP printed is 200+% in many cases.

Not sure if legal metrology can intervene in this. They should ideally. Trade margins must be capped in consumer interest. more

Not to overlook, however, is that export orders runs into millions of pieces whereas the local numbers are a meagre percentage of that.

Exporters are generally tax-exempt whereas local sales warrant local taxes. Hence the difference in prices.

Also, let's not overlook that a shirt sold to Germany at Rs.250/pc is sold for not less than 2500 rupees. more
As this is not under the purview of the L.M.let us Save this as the supply rate for the Retailer .

Full Shirt - 250 rupees add 30% margin = Rs. 325
Trousers - 450 rupees " = 585
Waistcoat - 600 rupees " = 780
Polo Shirt - 250 rupees
Skirt - 300 rupees
Pyjamas - 250 rupees ,

The cheapest non branded shirt will be marked Rs.999 .50 % discount will come to Rs. 500 . Ommagin a Rs.250 product is to cost you 500 . Trader takes 100 % margin , but we think that we are paying only 50% of the price . How we get fooled .

So if we keep in mind the manufacturer supplies Shirts etc. @ Rs. 250 , we will know next time where to buy .

Thank you ARJUN SINGH , really helpful post . more
Yes for few product trade margin is 200%. should be caped on all product. more
The Department of Legal Metrology is a regulatory Department. It is responsible for maintaining uniformity and accuracy in all weights and measures, weighing and measuring Instruments used by traders in all hats, markets and trading centres in the State.
Legal Metrology role is limited to weights and measures only. They have no role to play in the pricing of goods. more
Presently, the legal metrology do not interfere in pricing, but it is market driven and based on brand name. more
