Packaged Commodity Rules Amendment 2017
Thanks to all the members in this and the Connected Consumers circle for your inputs on MRP and Expiry date disclosure issues.
Attached, please find the detailed notification for amended Packaged Commodity Rules 2017 which is slated to go into effect Jan 1, 2018.
Highlights:
1) If a package contains a commodity which may become unfit for human consumption after a period of time, the best before or use by date, month and year shall also be mentioned on the label.
2) An eCommerce entity shall ensure mandatory declaration of the above information except the month/year in which commodity is manufactured or packed and display this information on digital and electronic network.
Several other inputs have also been included regarding eCommerce sites complying to MRP information display, manufacturers to ensure single MRP on products, etc.

I agree with Mr. Hoskote. In addition to what he has stated, on many items the MRP is written in so small font that its difficult to locate. I would suggest that every packaged item even if small in size, the MRP should be clearly visible. On some items where the MRP, manufacturing date, etc. is printed just before packing like medicines, it should be done in such a way that it is clearly visible and the ink used also should be indelible. Many times the ink used is of poor quality and its difficult to make out what's printed. more
