Income Tax Date Extended

Pulled out an all nighter on 30th just to file returns on time and today (not yesterday) the Government comes out with notification that deadline has been extended to the 7th. Really don't understand this. Govt should not mess with the common man like this. Can they be more upfront and less hush hush. Wonder if some of the big shot industrialists are still making up their mind to declare foreign accounts or not?? more

i do agree with you; The authority should have announcement at least one week before the deadline unless some event would have happened just before the original deadline. more
Earlier the date was extended only for the state of Gujarat. Now it hwho as been extended for those assessees also who are required to file their returns ELECTRONICALLY only. Not for assessees who had option to file manual returns. more
I agree that the extension has been given to accommodate the assessees rendered helpless because of the disturbances in Gujarat in the last week of August. In the similar situation of extensive floods in parts of the country a few years back, an extension was given to all assessees for filing. However, there is no excuse for assessees in other parts of the country for not filing within the original deadline. The extended date should be welcomed by them as a godsend. more
I do concur with Navven's view for Govt sticking with declared deadline. If Govt has to give benefit of disturbances it can pro active and declare it in well advance. But, why wait for the last day? You may see long queues every 31th Mar for NSC and other tax saving schemes in post offices and mutual Funds etc. more
The date of filing Income Tax Return has been extended for all people all over India & not for Gujarat state only. It would have been better if this should have been announced on or before 31 August. Also time limit should have been extended for 15 days or minimum of 10 days rather for 7 days. However, some extension is better. more
