Hospital charging 18 times prices

In what has happened at Fortis hospitals with the 7 year old, the hospital has charged 200 rupees for blood sugar strip where the actual price is only 13 rupees.

My question is was fortis simply violating the rules of MRP or in general there is no enforcement by mrp control officials when it comes to hospitals.

Worry is if every hospital across the country is cheating consumers on consumables like this (18 times the price in this case) what is the resolution.

Local Circles must make this national dialogue and with consumers affairs dept put an end to this menace. I also have a feeling that there is corruption by hospitals with local health inspectors and things are ignored. more

What action has bren taken by Haryana MRP dept on this matter? more
The Legal Metrology Department may consider auditing or through fake shopping of such violations on a routine manner and enforce heavy penalties. Tn fact not only the hospitals but also multiplexes, PVRs, Airports, Railway Stations, Tourists Places etc. more
Yes there should be some limit for hospital for particular disease and they should not charge more than that amount. more
once if found guilty licence should be cancelled and then others will get scared more
Exorbitant prices of the so called corporate hospitals has taken medical care away from our common man. This has nothing to do with the present government's policy of being pro-capitalist or pro-common man. The trend begun since our decision to shift from decades old socialistic pattern to present system with total ignorance of the economically weaker sections, who are the majority of our population. All the successive governments have completely failed to ensure that medical facilities are not made a source for making unrealistic profits by any entity and the best kind of medical facilities are always available to all sections of people at reasonable & affordable cost. The result is what we are discussing about. more
I have received a WhatsApp message from one President VKS on this particular issue today and is worth sharing with participants here for consideration and re-thinking on the entire issue of corporate hospitals' charges from c-patients in India. Briefly, it states that the Dengue Patient bill of Fortis Hospital contains an element of Doctors' fees just as Rs.53,000/- out of Rs.16 lakhs or so. That is just 3.3% of the total bill. This fees is the charge by a multiple specialist doctors who were involved in the management of this particular patient in the hospital. It is further said that the rest of the amount after deducted doctors' fees out of Rs.16 lakhs has gone to Fortis Hospital. It is not known how much of it has gone as profit of the hospital head Mr. Malvinder Mohan Singh and how much has been used on the maintenance of the hospital infrastructure which the CA and Company auditors alone can tell. I suggest that we compare the spread of expenditure on similar cases between a govt hospital of the stature of All India Institute of Medical Sciences and a corporate business world hospital like Forts and others, and determine how much of our taxes on pharmaceutica and equipment, on diagnostics, etc. is shared between the two economic segments of healthcare services. One thing that is clear to me is that this govt being pro capitalist is not going to favour subsidising the healthcare delivery out of our taxes from public sector hospitals. You would be knowing that this Govt has already asked some of the leading hospitals in public sector to be self-serving. In this situation, we would not be knowing how the taxes collected on this account will be utilised. more
