Greenwashing: Are Consumers Being Played?
Greenwashing is an act of making false or misleading statements about the environmental benefits of a product or practice. Companies are using terms like “eco-friendly,” “green,” or “natural” as a marketing gimmick, without offering concrete proof. According to a study by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), 79% of green claims made by organizations in India are exaggerated or misleading.
Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Greenwashing and Misleading Environmental Claims to address the issue of greenwashing and misleading environmental claims on 15 October, 2024. These Guidelines seek to foster practices where environmental claims are both truthful and meaningful, thus enhancing consumer trust and encouraging sustainable business practices.

Sir, I'm glad that someone has finally 'belled the cat' on the issue of greenwashing. I sincerely hope this sparks awareness and filters down to the busy citizens—leading to some tangible outcomes or meaningful administrative action. We’ve all been swayed by glossy publicity made easier through digital platforms, but sadly, we see little on the ground. It feels like citizens are being taken for a ride by these lofty claims and promises. I'm open to correction. more

Whether it is about greenwashing or any other aspect of marketing, pretty much every company makes misleading statements. How many "Number 1 in India" products do we know in practically any category? It would be worth keeping count. more

truly said like lot of items mention organically grown and price is higher but is anyone checking whether they are grown organically or not and fssai should check and introduce a certification for the same and also this needs to be done every 6 or 12 months. more
