5 days working of banks

As per news reports, the government is on the verge of allowing banks to work only 5 days a week, but with extended hours. This does not help. Its like asking a person to eat 4 days meal in a single day and remain hungry for the next 4 days. People require convenient working days for banking, so that they can visit the banks on their own holidays without having to take a casual leave. Convenience of the majority is important. Banking is not just depositing or withdrawing cash. The whole economy depends on it. What objection do bank emlployees have to taking staggerred holidays, in groups ? Dont the railways/airlines/police work that way ? Bank employees cannot enjoy an extended weekend by insisting on weekend holidays only. They can have their 2 weekly offs, but staggerted ones. What is their objection if banks can work 365 days, by staggerred working, benefitting the larger population, while themselves also getting their own 2 weeky offs ? Their only objection can be their own vested convenience. When public approaches the bank for activities other than just handling cash, the employees bemoan that there is such a lot of work and hadover a token to the customer or call him later. Customer has to make multiple visits for the same work by taking a casual leave. On the other hand, bank employees approach the government that due to use computers, workload is less and so they must have 2 weeky offs. Funny. Local circles must present this issue before the concerned ministry and strongly object to pampering the banks staff, to the detriment of general public. Enough is enough. more

Present system is good one. Here atleast 2 times in a month a person can go physically and can resolve pending issues without taking any leave. There are many issues which can not be resolved online. more
Staff at any bank has reduced appreciably compared to pre computer era. So, probably work load per person has remained same or increased. So, additional off day will further add up the pending works and will increase difficulties for the customers. more
First of all what is the need of 5 day working, either for the banks or any Government/semi Government/PSU? Why they can't work for 6 days a week? Also, we are talking here of white collar middle class people. What about the rural population? They don't have access to netbanking and other means. It is necessary for them to visit bank. more
I disagree. I am 62 and have not visited my bank for the last 10 years. This you cant say for railways and air flights that i have not travelled for the last 10 years. Absolutely all bank services are now online 24X7 - 365 days. ( people don’t appreciate that ). All you need to do is to get acclimatise with them and trust them. I do agree that very small portion of population do need to visit banks regularly but that should not be the dictating factor. I was a manager in a life insurance company . We saw drastic reduction ( almost 65%) in policy holder’s visit to our offices post implementation of online services. We have 5 days week since 2019. ( just curious .. which economic activity stops during these two days because of banks ) more
Respectfully disagree with your views, totally. Probably your experience with banks is just deposit and withdrawls if cash and cheques. Can we get an L/C issued online ? Can we get industrial loan or even home loan or car loan online ? Most of the online facilities are a hogwash. One HAS TO go to the bank. Are our issues resolved online ? Never. If you post an issue, within hours you get a message that issue is resolved, when it is really not so. Once they forward our complaint up the chain, they mark it as resolved and that way clear their own table.. My SGB interest is not paid for last about 2 years, but online when I complain, they say issue solved. Not once, but repeatedly. Offline, they have no clue. Your experiences are limited to a very small percentage of urban population and only on a very limited aspect of banking. more
With due respect to your comments, I differ. There are certain tasks which need visit to bank viz verification of signature ISR 2, submission of DRF, wrong entries, passbook printer not working etc. The banks have already reduced the strength at branch to minimal causing lot of hardship to all stakeholders. For auto credit [interest / dividend etc] transactions, many times now a days, it takes 4 to 5 days from the date the transaction is generated by the payer. Even cheque deposited is cleared after 3-4 days though date stamp of receipt is next working day. Since FY 2016-17 charges for services provided have increase multi fold while customer need to spend more time and energy. more
I fully agree with Mr. Malik's views. Banks should be kept open from Mon - Sat (may be half-day on Sat) for the benefit of general public, mainly senior citizens. LC should take it up with the concerned authorities. more
