Vitamin D Eases Diabetes Pain: Study

Vitamin D has been shown to ease pain in women with Type 2 diabetes and depression.

According to new study conducted at Loyola University Chicago and presented recently a campus research conference, a significant number of volunteers given weekly vitamin D2 supplementation (50,000 IUs) for six months reported a lessening of pain and their symptoms of depression.

At the start of the study, 61 percent of the women reported shooting or burning pain in their legs and feet (neuropathic pain) and 74 percent reported numbness and tingling in their hands, fingers, and legs (sensory pain). After three to six months of receiving the supplements, the patients reported a significant decrease in neuropathic and sensory pain.

"Pain is a common and often serious problem for women with Type 2 diabetes and depression," said lead researcher Todd Doyle, M.D., with the Loyola Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences. "While further research is needed, D2 supplementation is a promising treatment for both pain and depression in Type 2 diabetes."

Type 2 diabetes is associated with depression and pain, but no prior studies have evaluated the use of vitamin D supplementation as a treatment, Dr. Doyle said.

Researchers now plan to study how the vitamin works to ease pain and depression, using funding from the National Institutes of Health.

"Vitamin D has widespread benefits for our health and certain chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes," said Sue Penckofer, a study co-author and professor at the Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.

MY PERSONAL COMMENT ON THIS. DIABETICS GENERALLY GET PEREFERAL NEUROPATHY OF FEET AND SOMETIMES OF HANDS. THE BEST COURSE
TO GET VITAMIN D IS SITTING IN THE SUN WITH AS MUCH OF BODY EXPOSED FOR MINIMUM 30 MINIUTES EVERY DAY WITH SUN GLASSES, AS ULTRA VIOLET RAYS ARE HARMFUL FOR EYES. EXERCISE IS ALSO IMPORTANT. FOR PAIN CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR.
I DO NOT HAVE DIABETIES BUT HAVE PEREFERAL NEUROPATHY OF THE FEET. FOR PAIN RELEIVING, I HAVE BEEN ADVISED 450MGS OF GABAPINTIN BEFORE SLEEP. I WAS ADVISED 300MGS EVERY 8 HOURS BUT I CAN BEAR THE PAIN DURING DAY TIME. I TAKE IT AT NIGHT TO GET A SOUND SLEEP. THERE IS NO CURE FOR PEREFERAL NEUROPATHY EXCEPT DO NOT WORRY OR GET DEPRESSED. LEAD A NORMAL LIFE AND KEEP SMILING. more

Dear Dr. Mittal sir, Thanks for your concern & Suggestions . I have already mailed to my surgeon for advice on pregabalin/gabapentine. D.L.Jalan more
Mr Jalan, good to receive your details. Frankly I would need to review your MRIs. I believe that the symptoms may improve gradually. Just stick to the medicines. And next time around, I would suggest you meet your neurologist and talk about treatment with Pregabalin or Gabapentin. By these details I am assuming you are not a diabetic and have no thyroid disorder. I will maintain that drug induced neuropathy is usually not reversible. But you have said that you have felt better over past 6 months. So I would suggest that you should continue treatment. Also suggesting a regular check up of PSA levels. Dear Raja Chandra sir & saumya Mittal sir,, Brief History of my illness. I was operated for Slip Disc. in L 2 to L 5 levels about 2 years before with Cable & 8 screws fitted in spine. After about 11 months some infection was noticed in that area & seeing the symptoms I was Diagnosed TB & medication was started for the same & continued for almost 5 months with no improvement . Doctors advised me to remove all the implants & biopsy was done for the Pus . Doctor operated me for the 2 nd time & removed only one screw Which was infected according to my doctor. In the mean time I was diagnosed MOTTS ( Micro Bacterial growth other then TB ). TB medications were stopped & Antibiotics started for the treatment of MOTTS. These medications went on for other 5 months almost with visible improvement but not totally cured. Doctors advised again to get all the implants removed. This was done in the 3rd operation about 6 months before . The medicines continued for 3 months more with good results & then the medicines were stopped. Now MRI etc. shows no infection with other symptoms also indicating that now there is no infection. But in the mean time I started the feeling of the problem of tingling in the leg, much sensation on the tips of all 20 fingers of hand & feet, & the sensation of Walking on the Mattress as mentioned earlier. My Doctors have advised to take only some multivitamin tablets & vitamin D sachets once a month. In the past 4 months the tingling sensation in the tips of the fingers have improved a lot but the feeling of mattress is still there . In the meantime I was diagnosed for Prostate cancer also. But that was cured By Radiation therapy . Sorry for the trouble . Can you advise me now that I have explained every thing to you D.L.Jalan. more
Mr Jalan. You have probably developed neuropathy secondary to drugs and their toxic secondary compounds that are produced on metabolism. Now I am not sure why you were on these medications, but then the neuropathy could be because of the disease process itself. I don't like to commit myself to negative opinions without full details, but I should tell you that drug induced neuropathy are usually irreversible. Having said that, I repeat I don't have the full details. I would like to stand corrected of course. You could however try methycobalamin. And there is no harm in trying this. Vitamin D has many beneficial effects besides its new found role in neuropathy. So that way you have nothing to lose. And I hope your neurologist has scanned and tested you for reversible causes of neuropathy. Dr Saumya Mittal Physician and Diabetician 973711878 more
