Commercialisation of Medical Services

Subject : COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE NOBLE PROFESSION CALLED ‘’MEDICINE’’
1. Addressing MODI for his medical tourism approach. He is visiting tons of countries since his election as the PM of India, however only to realize that our own country lags sufficient hospitals.
2. It is to make you aware about the mental agony and commercial hardship we have gone through in the last 20 days, due to unprofessional and purely commercial approach of medical fraternity of FORTIS GROUP OF HOSPITALS. Though India is known as a major hub of medical tourism and people from all across the globe chose India as second to none for their medical facilities, but what about our own citizens those who have first right on all these benefits due to easy money flowing from foreign patients, who are brought with lucrative offers to India for their treatment charging hefty sum of amount and giving false hopes.
3. The reasons for this distress is my stay with FORTIS HOSPITAL Sector 62, Noida, where I stayed for last 20 days as an attendant to my mother in law.
4. She was under treatment of Pulmonary Department, being headed by Dr. Mrinal Sircar. Being a non-medico myself, I do not challenge the capability or credibility of Dr. Sircar or of his team, however, I am looking forward to an answer which still remains unanswered ever after 4 days post losing my mother.
5. Why ICU for an OPD patient? Why time and again attendants are asked to sign documents even for administrating medicine or life support function. If it is doctor’s decision then all such decisions should be taken by qualified professionals rather than a layman myself.
6. There is gross mismatch between the published rate of ICU vs. Amount Charged. What right a hospital has to ask for patient’s insurance policy sum insured. My relative was called by the Hospital Administration and they asked him about the Insurance cover of my Mother In Law.
7. To someone on ventilator is as common in this hospital as administering any medicine for headache. Out of 20 ICU beds, (as told by the ICU Nurse) there were 15 patients on Ventilator. Doctors were keen on keeping my mother in law on ventilator even though a layman like myself knows that at her age revival from the life support is high uncertain. Words are put in attendant’s mouth and the circumstances are created, (EMOTIONALLY) to agree for life support gadgets and ultimately you have no choice but to agree for the same and sign the documents.
8. Doctors behavior leaving a few is so arrogant and irritating that sometimes you even think of shifting the patients elsewhere. Hospital is so finely managed for commercial reasons if you ask for running bills, it is not provided, for days together.
9. Doctors in ICU and CCU and attending doctors charge Rs. 500 per visit and this doctor covers 20 patients per round which means one visit of doctor is around 25000, and the same for junior doctors is around 22000
10. We have requested the doctors and the staff to explain the health conditions of our mother on daily basis and which is our right but Dr. Sircar turned down our request saying junior doctors and ICU attendends are capable enough to tell us the updates which was never given satisfactorily.
11. MY mother by grace of god regained the heath and came out of ventilator support, however due to incapability of the medical staff in the ICU and constant insistence of putting her on ventilator has taken her life. (There was NO – ‘’One bed One Nurse’’ assistance, they were rude and were seen on their phone constantly, whatsapp and playing games.)
12. To conclude this and my reasons for writing that Fortis Hospital is not a right choice. My only virtue for this letter is to make people aware of such a slaughter house in which, not the animals but the patients are put under the knife. They are exploited financially, emotionally and the mental agony that they have to go through is unexplainable.
13. This hospital has different priority rather than just serving the human cause.
14. This is not my sane out of disgust as I have lost my dear mother, who lost her life in ICU, but if the track records checked with the police is now and then, there is a vandalism and hospital is damaged by the attendants of patients those who have lost their lives and administered with wrong medication.
15. It is my appeal to you to kindly send a team or do an audit with the Hospital with which the above points can be ascertained and the hospital should be given a strict warning to refrain from indulging in such activities which only serves their Financial Purposes and commercialize their business even more.

Suggest always take a second opinion when they talk of surgery or taking a patient into ICU. Half of the time they lead you into this exercise unnecessarily. We have to be vigilant and not taken in by these money minded doctors. more
Agree with the writer and others commenting here. There are places offering health care facilities @ 100-200/- only for past 41 years. We at our registered centered for health and education have felt the change ,specially among the lower strata working for bade sahebs and memsahebs. They Want to go to 5 star hospitals as they are Not convinced by low charges. No doctor can bring down fever within 24 hours and it is a Shame if Nursing Home cannot Control Diarrhoea in a kid age 2 years with oral medication, to satisfy the mother a drip is infused to baby who is not vomiting and accepting medicines + ORS . Who will pay nursing home @ at least 2000/- day? Are these not blackmailing tactics? Carry on people with your individual experiences. There are some who take it easy with disease and nursing homes as 5 star hotels to get admitted to impress people / to evade arrest /to flaunt wealth. It is One case in hospital for 1000/- minimum vs 10 cases in charitable clinics-total =1000. more
My comments: 1. As far as medical service to the patient is concerned, in case you do feel that there was a negligence on the part of the hospital, one can always take up the grievance wherein you need to take view of the experts about negligence in the treatment. 2. As far as commercialization is concerned I differ. Yes the profession is noble. But do the doctors studying and coming out of the medical colleges are provided any free education. The Doctors on an average spend 10-12 years in the study spending lakhs and lakhs of rupees. Then the doctor is forced to spend time in serving villages/rural area and then only his degree is issued. Even most of the books cost thousands of rupees. One of the student has shown me a book which was costing about Rs. 10,000/-. Many many doctors do not find jobs in the Govt. hospitals mostly because of red tap-ism. There are other revealing facts in the appointment. The govt itself has not categorised medical service in the noble professional category as it is not providing any free education, books etc. Govt. on the one hand hand says there is a shortage of medical professional and on the other hand the Doctors do not get jobs because of obvious reasons. These comments do not justify any unethical business if any being practicised by the hospital but with a view to express that the same requires attention of all stakeholders right from the stage of education, appointment etc. more
Dear Shri Vinod Sahni Ji, Thanks for your keen interest in the comments. I think I have no where supported unfair business or unethical business practices of the medical fraternities. Not requiring a particular treatment but giving the treatment for the financial gains is definitely unethical business and need to be handled strictly. However, whether the treatment is required or not can be best commented/verified only by the experts in the field. My comments related to the cost and fee being charged by the medical professional were based on my observation and the cost being incurred by the medical professional to enable him/her to earn. It take a minimum of 10 years in the study before he starts earning his livelihhod that too passing through an unconducive environment. After studying for more than 10 years, he gets a salary of something 60-70 K per month. Again I am repeating there is no excuse for doing unethical business in the medical field under any circumstances. more
MR VIRMANI REASONABLE COST AT PRIVATE HOSPITALS IS OK NO ONE MINDS IT.
BUT PUTTING A PERSON IN ICU WITHOUT NEED OR PUTTING A HEALTHY PERSON ON VENTILATOR IS ONLY GREED TO FLEECE THE POOR HELPLESS PERSON FALLEN IN THE TRAP.
MORE THAN FIFTY PERCENT SURGICAL PROCEDURES ARE NOT NECESSARY, THEY ARE PERFORMED TO FLEECE MORE MONEY FROM THE TRAPPED PATIENTS.
IN COUNTIES LIKE JAPAN CEZERIAN OPERATIONS FOR DELIVERY IS A VERY RARE EVENT AND MOST NURSING HOMES AND HOSPITALS DO NOT DO IT. IT IS ONLY DONE AT BIGGER HOSPITALS, ONLY WHEN THE LIFE OF MOTHER OR CHILD IS AT STAKE. PERCENTAGE IS LESS THAN ONE PERCENT.

BUT OUR PRIVATE HOSPITALS/NURSING HOMES ONLY PREFER TO DO THE SURGERY TO GET MORE MONEY FROM THE PATIENTS.

SAME IS TRUE ABOUT THE JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERIES.

QUALITY OF SERVICE IN CCUs/ICUs IS VERY VERY POOR. MANY MACHINES GADGETS DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. LOW PAID NURSING STAFF AND TRAINEE INTERN DOCTORS MANAGE MOST WORK. SPECIALISTS ONLY COME FOR VISITS. IN REAL EMERGENCY THERE IS NO ONE TO TAKE DECISION. THE NURSING STAFF ARE BRAINLESS AND FOLLOW THE WRITTEN PRESCRIPTION. MY FRIEND WAS ADMITTED TO A PRIVATE HOSPITAL IN DELHI FOR UTI COMPLICATION. HIS PERSONAL PHYSICIAN TREATED HIM WITH STEROIDS, AS A RESULT DUE TO EXCESSIVE FEVER AND WEAKNESS HE BECAME UNCONSCIOUS AT HOME.
THE INTERN AT ICU TOOK IT A CASE OF HEART AND CALLED HEART SPECIALIST ON PANEL. THROUGH OUT HIS 20 DAY STAY AT HOSPITAL HE WAS UNDER TREATMENT OF HEAR SPECIALIST. MANY TIMES WE WERE TOLD TO GIVE CONSENT FOR PUTTING HIM ON VENTILATOR. BEING DIABETIC HE WAS ADVISED TO TAKE INSULIN SHORTS. HE WAS NOT ABLE TO EAT PROPERLY, SO HIS BLOOD SUGAR WAS LOW, BUT THE SISTER WAS INSISTING ON GIVING HIM ADVISED DOSE OF INSULIN. ONLY OUR INTERVENTION, COULD PREVENT HIM FROM GOING INTO COMA BECAUSE OF HYPOGLYCEMIA.

HE WAS PUT ON SEDATIVES AND WAS MORALLY AND PHYSICALLY CRIPPLED. MANY A TIMES WE WERE TOLD THAT THAT HIS WAS HOPELESS CASE AND WE MAY CALL RELATIVES FOR LAST DARSHAN OR TAKE HIM ELSEWHERE. WE CONTACTED A KNOWN UROLOGIST. HE ASKED FOR THE URINE CULTER TEST AND ECO OF URINARY TRACK. SURPRISINGLY HOSPITAL HAS DONE NONE OF THE TESTS. THE TESTS WERE DONE AT OUR REQUEST, TREATMENT STARTED FOR UTI AND PATIENT RECOVERED. HOSPITAL HAS DONE EVERYTHING FOR KILLING HIM AND CLAIMING HIS MEDICAL INSURANCE CLAIM OF OVER TWO LAKHS FOR THE MISTREATMENT.

FORTIS SHALIMAR DELHI HAS OFTEN TREATED RIGHT EYE FOR LEFT AND LEFT LEG IN PLACE OF RIGHT. more
I can only say 'Only the shoe wearer can tell where the shoe pinches' Most of private hospitals try to make money by hook and crook. If they geniuinely provide the service and charge, no body will complain like this. more
In a country where ambulances are sufficient for the natives of India. Medical tourism is just show off. First medical facilities be provided and accessible to all Indians who are residing in far flung rural areas rather than far flung countries. more
WELL,THE WORLD NOBLE HAS DISAPPEARED FROM THE MEDICAL PROFESSION LONG BACK.THERE OVER EAGERNESS TO ATTEND TO FOREIGN PATIENTS IS NOT ONLY TO EARN MONEY,BUT CHEAP PUBLIVITY FOR DOING NOTHING.MOST OF FOREIGNERS COME ARAB COUNTRIES,WHERE MONEY IS CHEAP AS IT IS SIMPLY OIL DUG OUT FROM THE EARTH,AS EASILY AS WATER.EXCEPT THE METROS,THERE AR NO MEDICAL FACILITES PROVIDED BY THE GOVT.I AM WRITING FROM THE CITY OF FARIDABAD,WHERE THE ONLY GOVT. HOSPITAL IS THE ONE CONSTRUCTED IN THE AFTERMATH OF PARTITION IN 1947.TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE CHIEF MINISTER'S STATEMENT THE STAFF SHORTAGE IS MORE THEN 50% AT ANY TIME,AT ALL LEVELS. THE PRIVATE HOSPITALS CHARGE HEFTY FEES EVEN FOR OPD,BUT ALSO LACK DOCTORS.AT ONE HOSPITAL I HAD TO WAIT TILL 12.45 PM FOR THE DOCTOR TO APPEAR,AND GOT MY TURN AT 2.00 PM,SITTING HUNGRY AND THIRSTY IN THIS HO SEASON.EVEN THOUGH I TRIED TO QUENCH MY THIRST WITH A CUP OF COFFEE,I WAS POORER BY RUPEES 98.HAVE YO HEARD OF THIS UNIQUE WAY OF MAKING MONEY?IN ANOTHER HOSPITAL HERE,I WAS GIVEN THE APPOINTMENT FOR 4.00 PM AND GOT MY TURN AT 4.30.BUT WE HAVE TO BEAR ALL THIS IGNITIES FROM THE MOST NOBLE PROFESSION,WHO HAVE NO QUALMS ABOUT MINTING MONEY.THE DOCTOR COMES TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER FINISHING THE PATIENTS AT HIS HOME CLINIC,WHERE HE DOES NOT HAVE TO GIVE ANY ACCOUNT OF HIS INCOME.THE MODI GOVT. IS SINGING ITS PRASE,BUT WE ARE WORSE OFF THEN THE PREVIOUS GOVT.OF COURSE WE ARE OURSELVES RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS;THE POPULATION HAS GONE OUT OF CONTROL,AND THERE ARE NO TEACHING FACILITIES FOR MEDICAL UNDERGRADUATES,EXCEPT BY SPENDING MONEY.CAN EVEN GOD HELP US? more
