Assessment of 1st month of Swachh Bharat Mission

Dear all:

Thanks for your inputs on How the first month of Swachh Bharat Mission has been. Here is a summary based on your inputs. Kindly submit your comments if you have anything additional to contribute.

First Month of Swachh Bharat Mission: How has it been?

What is working?
1. Awareness - cleanliness issue being discussed in family and social groups
2. Increasing number of people are throwing garbage only in dustbins now
3. People are careful about keeping their surroundings clean
4. Footpaths are cleaner
5. Vendors are making a conscious effort of carrying a dustbin with them and picking their garbage

What is not working as planned?
1. People are still spitting and urinating in public
2. The segregation of dry, wet, recyclable waste is not happening
3. Municipal Corporation is still off schedule
4. A corner which is cleaned today, eventually gets filled up with garbage in a few days

What are the major challenges?
1. Changing the mind-set of the people - It is not my home, I can throw garbage here and why should I clean it, it is not my job!
2. Get people to clean their pet waste from the streets
3. People clean once or twice but don’t make it a habit
4. Making people follow the rules without imposing fines
5. Making people understand that they should not throw wrappers/garbage out of moving cars and autos
6. Efforts made at small group level are washed away by apathy at all municipal levels more

We have tried to bring the sense of cleanliness. Yes it has worked. Awareness has increased. It is difficult to garner enough strength of people to clean and maintain larger areas. Waste to Energy concept shall be put to work on national level and private sector can be brought in for sustained efforts. more
Law should be equal to everybody in dealing with the industrial waste. Nobody should be allowed to interfere in this matter. Law should be made very strict regarding the industrial wastes and Govt should be very strict that corruption should not interfere in allowing the industrial wastes to be let out freely with out treating them properly. more
The change as to start from within and spread like a wild fire to my family->My community->My Area-> My State ->my Country and this has to be through a ripple effect. We need to bring in all the local colonies into this movement. more
One time job can be performed by fear of a punishment but for longer version it will not work.people will make different reasons/excuses.We should develop a swachh culture in our society .Right it now from our home, lane ,town & so on . Education institutions may take a vital part . more
