Fully agree with MsChandramouli Sarkar on the pavements and road space devoured by hawkers. In fact vegetable vendors spill over on busy road at the junction of Lake Road, Parasar Road and Rashbehari Avenue resulting into chaos and considerable slow down in traffic. Shoppers find it challenging to handle the minuscule road space left for them. Also agree with Mr Ranabir Ghosh on the quality of road surface. Most of jobs carried out by KMC is outsourced.Maybe they have diluted their specs with time as I feel Kolkata is the only tier 1 city that still carries out laying out roads manually. All other major cities employ contractors who mobilises mechanised process of road preparation.
Footpaths of Kolkata are almost fully occupied with hawkers. The pedestrians are compelled t walk on the roads that not only slow down the speed of vehicles it also causes accidents. On quite a few important junctions like Lake market, the hawkers have occupied even 10-15% of the roads allowing only a narrow channel for vehicles to ply. Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Govt. are totally indifferent to this issue.
In our area (Kustia Road) road condition is very bad. However road lights are working properly. The biggest problem here is, with a little rain, water logging on road is a compulsory factor.
