UPI transaction fee coming
Though our LC survey points to user disengagement with UPI if transaction fee is implemented, Governor of RBI this week indicated that the current zero‑fee UPI model may not last indefinitely, warning that sustaining UPI’s massive infrastructure requires funding. He noted the government is currently subsidizing banks and service providers to maintain the free service, but stressed the need for long-term financial viability. 
• He said: “UPI has borne good fruits,” and emphasized that someone must bear the cost—either the government or users—for the system to remain accessible, cheap, secure, and sustainable. 
• While not announcing a fee yet, he acknowledged that the government and RBI are considering how to handle these costs going forward—perhaps through Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) or direct charges to users.
