Tesla Inc.: India Business Plans Face Uncertainity

The continued exodus of executives from Tesla India signals the waning interest of the Elon Musk company in the Indian market.

Tesla tried hard to reduce import duties for EVs(electric vehicles), which can go upto 100%, but failed in its attempt. Musk would prefer to sell electric cars in India first before setting up a manufacturing plant in the country.

Tesla's most affordable car, Model 3 is placed in the luxury category due to high import duties and thus has gone out of reach of the masses.

If the US company decides to bring in its more expensive Model S or its luxury SUV Model X - both are expected to cost around Rs.1.5Crores.

Meanwhile a spate of electric scooter fires this year in India has alarmed the government, which is keen to promote use of such two- wheelers in its fight against pollution.

Faulty battery cells and battery modules are among the main causes, early investigations have identified.
India wants e-scooters and e-bikes to make up 80% of total two-wheeler sales by 2030, from about 2% now.

However compressed natural gas (CNG) has emerged as an environment-friendly alternative to petrol and diesel. Kilograms of biodegradable wastes, sourced from markets, comprising of food, vegetables and fruit wastes have become the raw material for the plant generating CNG. Civic bodies prefer powering their trucks by CNG, sourced from biodegradable wastes. more

EVs need battery, the batteries with rechargeable solution. Li-ion is a rechargeable battery - Li-ion moves from negative to positive electrodes during discharge period and back during charging time. Highest energy storage to smallest weight/volume ratio of any kind of today's commercially available battery makes Li-ion battery an attractive choice. Very fast charging and longer life span are the other compelling reasons in favour of Li-ion battery. Kolkata headquartered Exide (automotive and industrial battery maker) is likely to invest Rs. 6000 Cr to set up 12GWh Li-ion cell manufacturing facility in Karnataka. The debt free company has generated its funding from internal accruals and may go for bank loans as and when needed. The company is looking for revenue generation of the order of about Rs 10,000-12,000 Cr from its Li-ion cell manufacturing in next 8-10years. Its lead-acid battery business is not redundant and is also growing. Batteries will be meant for automotive sector and also as energy storage solution (say for renewable energy that cannot supply continuous energy - for example, solar energy when sun is available and wind turbine based energy when wind is available). Exide has its proprietary R&D unit in Kolkata that is constantly driving innovations for better processes and products. It has fully equipped mechanical workshop with CNC machines. more
EVs are smart vehicles, wherein when the battery gets fully charged, the computer inside switches to normal, friction braking. EV may be electric traction, but the scope extends to electronic system, as electricity is the power source in both. The intelligence inside is provided by semiconductor chips, which are electonic. Charge controllers manage the system. In all we thus achieve energy efficiency and freedom from the earlier internal combustion engine pollution. more
In regenerative braking option, motor may reverse its direction of rotation and begins to work as generator, supplying power to battery. But in certain cases battery may get overcharged and undesirable impacts may result. Some design uses ultracapacitors to store the energy and release them whenever needed. Green plants can potentiaaly work as Carbon Capture Storage solution - in presence of sunlight green leaves absorb CO2 by the process of photosynthesis. Under controlled conditions, CO2 can be absorded and stored in liquid state to supply to plant leaves, while daylight is available. This can increase agricultural yield, where unpredictable climate condition can devastate the agricultural yield. more
Regenerative braking option available only with electric traction, Rs. 6 crores, just in railways, and more importantly 15 millions electricity units saved thereby. Imaginehttps://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/allahabad/regenerative-braking-helps-railways-to-save-energy-money/articleshow/10131180.cms. Rest, the west, US, already using bio-diesel, since a very long time, recycling edible oil from restaurant and eateries, that would otherwise go waste. Reducing also by a whopping 78% the carbon emissions. Petro-diesel drilling too requires energy. Simply using trans-esterification technology this revolutionary change made possible, hugely increase scope of vegetable and fatty oils usage. The planet for sustainability, requires such efficient resource utilisation. more
GHG emission reduction, significant reduction of ventilation costs, lesser noise, fewer moving parts and lower maintenance are some of the advantages that electric/battery powered vehicles offer when compared with diesel propelled vehicles. Regenerative braking allows power absorption in braking resistors - but many consider it to be removable option since battery itself can absorb any regenerative power. In electric/battery operated mining trucks ( for emission free mining operation) undergoing downhill operation, positive energy balance is needed as a rare case. Here mechanical braking comes to rescue, say for emergency situation, and so might not require braking resistor. Mining industry need to be redefined with increasing use of electric/battery mode of operation and help build a more sustainable future for future generation. Battery degradation, ERS ( electric road system), reduction of battery space for more passenger space are among the other disadvantages that need to be addressed to enhance popularity of electric/battery driven propulsion system. Germany, for example wants to become carbon neutral by 2045. But energy shortage caused by Russia's reduction of natural gas flows to Europe has threatened to derail the target. Its transportation sector is already under pressure. It wants to expand infrastructures for electric alternatives, add more bicycle lanes and increase funding for the use of more efficient heavy commercial vehicles. more
