Electric vehicle's powertrains are made of fewer parts and require less maintenance than combustion engines, which can potentially result in layoffs.In engines and transmissions' production alone, jobs can be put to risks.Further automation of vehicle production may not be sufficient to support the current level of jobs.

Key challenge as a developing country with per capita energy consumption below global average, is to 'meet the growing demand for energy'. India's transformation to a gas-based economy and developing bio-fuels can potentially achieve the needed carbon reduction target.
