Tax Payers vs. population

You are making the same mistake that Aiyer of Economic Time made. You know 65% of our population resides in rural India and engaged in farming and related activity. This big chunk of about 75-80 crores of our population is not liable to pay any tax being exempt or not earning enough from their vocations/ ancillary activities to be liable to tax. Again about 25% or our urban population does not have enough income liable to income tax. Think of small time vendors selling fruits, vegetables, peanuts, cobblers, barbers, carpenters, rikshaw pullers, auto drivers, taxi drivers, shoe shine boys, petty shop owners, panwalas, and so on besides jobless people, toddlers, students and the like . If you exclude this segment then only 10% of the population or about 12 crore people will be left out. If 6-7 crore people are filing returns it amounts to almost 55%. Even in advanced and industrialised countries not more than 30 to 35% of the population files income tax returns. more

Well analyzed, As in any other country only few thousand rule over the money and rest are just struggling to live and these few do not want to be responsible for development of the country , they are more concerned about amassing the wealth by whatever means and controlling the people in power. Has it to be only govt. responsibility to bring out the black money , why are these big industrialist or people with most wealth not feeling responsible. Why only the service class is the one which pays the most taxes and is the most burdened. We all know who these few thousands are who have amassed wealth for their own good and yet do nothing about it? more
I agree with Mr. Jain; we are a nation of reservations/exemptions. You make a group and you have a significant no. of voters then you can lobby (or the politician will make it) and you will be exempted. I feel that we have to abolish the income tax and start taxing the transactions. Then even the agriculturist also will pay the tax more
Don't you think that there is not only Income Tax in India but numerous other taxes which everybody pays. Thus everybody pays either direct taxes or indirect taxes or both. more
well written quite convincing more
Mttra! We are waiting for that day when the Black Money will be unearthed and Income Tax abolished. AISA LAGTA HAI KI unearth KI BAAT KARNA hindi ka ANARTH ho GAYA HAI. :-). Ashok Varma more
