Smart cities - model plan for Urban Development Ministry
People are talking much of a smart city / habitat. Do you know a model smart city with the following facilities had existed in India some 85 years back? I do not know whether the same style continues today or not.
Please go through the following description of the model smart city critically described by a famous explorer of India and who was a critical journalist not accepted anything which he had seen.
The place had been developed during British Raj - and not by British officers but by an Indian.
Power generation: The place had its own electrical generation system. The power is supplied to the industries and to the residences at communal expenses. Thus they had avoided costly meters.
Water resources: A canal was dug and water works installations were done.
Agriculture & related: The place had small modern farms which produced vegetables and cow fodder.
Dairy farms: It had most well organized farms. Every head of a cattle was picked one as specimens. Scrupulous cleanliness was maintained. Pasteurizing facilities and electrical butter making machines were provide in common places. Most hygiene milk were produced and marketed.
Education: Separate Modern High schools for girls and boys and even a college for boys and girls separately. There is also a technical college. All the institutions had hostels. The High Schools were managed by a Principal and 38 teachers. No formal religious education was given but a noble character development forms of education were imparted.
Health: The place had a little hospital and a Maternity Home.
Employment: The units of the place absorb all the educated youth in one form or the other without migration.
Industrialization: The men at work were not merely satisfied but had positively enthusiastic.
1. There located a footwear factory. Boots, shoes, sandals, hand bags and belts were manufactured through mechanization.
2. Next to the footwear factory located is textile factory.
3. Next to it is an up-to-dated engineering machinery factory. Scientific instruments, laboratory apparatus, balances and weighs etc. were manufactured.
4. Next to it was a Model Industries manufacturing electrical fans, gramophones, knives and furniture.
5. A complete printing press for the needs of the area.
Inheritance of wealth: People are encouraged to save. After about 15 years, he may choose to withdraw or continue but receive the interest on accumulations. The accumulations will pass on to the next two generations. The stay is free but they had to pay cost of maintenance. The flats are built by the authorities according to the taste of the prospective tenant. He has a right to live in the same flat for his life and his succeeding two generations. Thereafter the right ceases. However, the succeeding generations may opt for a new dwelling unit of their choice. The cost of construction is recovered in the form of installments.
Common areas like parks, roads etc. were so well maintained by the Body of the Place. All the above were without the help of the local or state or union governments’ involvement. All by the residents only.

Why not we press for such a village, town, colony etc. from the Governments – Local State level and Center level. It is nothing new. It had existed in our Country near to New Delhi.

Fantastic. as you said, it is nothing new. implementation is the issue. Old systems to be revived. Rethink, Revive old systems in modern way to achieve growth. more

Congrats Varaprasadji ! Yes if the citizens really want they can achieve with right people managing issues. We all agree that the spirit of all plans / rules / Acts are pious, its only in their implementation that we fail. Actually tell u what ---I am waiting for that day when no one will be easily willing to go for tickets of any party because public service will be a TAPASYA which the materialist will be least interested in. Is it feasible / possible or just a pipe dream---- anybodys guess! Thanks -ashok varma more
