Roads of Mumbai
Our roads is a good source of continuous income to our politicians as well as bureaucrats. There is a very big racket involved in this seemingly innocent task. Making them and again digging them is the business! We are always there to pay taxes to pay for most of this road making activities. I remember when Frere Road that joins harbor line was made of stones it lasted for about 150 years. After removing stones and making tar roads that road has become a nightmare of all motorist. Our BMC engineers deliberately make roads such that repeated making will be required. There is big business in it so long as we the citizen are there to pay the taxes. Put tax on helpless people and spend it on road making, that is the business! Sol long as this continues we will never have good lasting roads.
There are other things to it. When concrete roads are made there is no consideration of rain water. Actually we should have roads made of large stones as slabs much like the Frere road that was built by British. Today they use paverblocks as a cheap alternative to large stone slabs. Our city has been converted into a Genie pig, they do experiment with our tax payer's money, nobody to ask them since, our representatives are part of that corruption. more

If contractor is honest, the throw him out. Severe penalties (say 5-10) !)times of the project cost must be recovered from all Engineers concerned contractor. If road develop pot holes within two years of complition of work and if bridge develops weakness within 5 yeares, then this clause be applied. more

You are 200% right. We have no right to say a word against British. They took lot of benefits from India, but did all jobs with quality and not made for repeat work. Now jobs are done with an intention of re-doing it in again in 2 year time or Knowing that there will be a development and some of the works are waste of money. Hope everybody remember that complete Mumbai MTNL put under ground a set of 16-20 5 inches pipes. It was supposed to be for all the cables run in the sky and above ground. Non of them are used. They new before laying it that wire less phones and Dish are going to come. We are looting our own country worst than a foreigner! It was a big scam and never opened it. How many thousand crores wasted, we do not know. If local body cover a small road patch work over night, it may cost few hundreds and if they delay a week, it will cost few thousands because of the heavy traffic. Why they cannot have a mobile repair work team for different areas of Mumbai and save money? more

The BMC should allow citizens to appount a civil engineer who will supervise the construction of roads and unless he or she gives a certificate of authenticity.That way credibility will increase. more

If Performance guarantee is not taken from the contractors, this is what happens. A Flyover bridge linking East and West Jogeshwari near Hub Mall on western express Highway is pending since decade. If the solution to finish the task was not there why did the task was started? Some one needs to file PIL and put MMRDA and BMC answerable. Similarly the Dindoshi Flyover and Flyover just before the Toll naka on south side are the Horrible example of work done in most unprofessional manner. In all countries the Highway moves straight with Bridges going on the side exits, in our case the bridges go above high way, so what happens is that the 4 lane highway is then made in to 2 way Flyover. This leads to traffic jam near the starting point of flyover. The absolute blunder and the wastage of money. One more example, The Andheri flyover which the Jog construction had made!! see the condition below the flyover. everything was wasted. Why such planning? How much money was wasted in delay due to court case filed by some Environment NGO? Where is this NGO now? can somebody investigate and find out? more
