Do you know the difference between Service Tax and Service Charge?
The money generated from Service Charge goes to the owner of the restaurant and is later distributed among the staff (a form of forced tip), while Service Tax goes to the central government. It is charged ONLY when you dine at an AIR CONDITIONED restaurant. It should be 12.36% of 40% of the Food Bill + Service charge or 4.9% of the total Food Bill + Service charge. Do check the bill, next time you dine out. For details see http://drjayashreegupta.blogspot.in/2014/09/demystifying-service-tax.html more
