Service charges at restaurants

Most customers remain ignorant of service charges as they do not carefully look at bills. Why should it not be mandatory for restaurants to display promptly if they are charging for services and if it is optional to pay or not. Some restaurants have indications of service charges in menu cards somewhere in small prints which hardly get noticed. more  

In fact the service charges though mentioned in the bills overseas , they are optional for the customer and the customer can choose not to pay them. But in India the customer is taken for granted and the service charges are levied as a mandatory charge . more  
It is regrettable why the Govt.has such lacunas,a rule to be passed that no service charge to be levied,the charge is more than the GST being charged on your bill.Govt.should take immediate action on the issue with a stern process. more  
It should be compulsory not to charge service charges as serving food is a part of restaurant service. That is why prices at self service restaurants are lesser than those at full service restaurants. As customers were not checking bills , they were shelling out service charges plus tipping the servers. Law should mandate no service charges at restaurants and hotels. If you do not get proper service from any waiter make it a point to register your negative feedback and tell them that you will avoid them in future because of the waiter. more  
Both are equally responsible. It is also our duty to look bill before paid/spend.
Before place the order we should as about service charge, GST and any complimentary offer, Card discount etc.
We can get good bargain before the order. I do often.... more
