Do you have healthy eyes?

The number of persons requiring glasses (spectacles) or contacts (contact lenses) has risen steadily over the years. And more than 50% Indians are now estimated to require some sort of vision aid or refractive surgery.

“Too many of us take our vision for granted”, says Dr. Maneesh Kumar, MS (Ophth), Fellow Oculoplasty (who practices at OphthaCare Eye Centre in Janakpuri). “Our eyes are one of the hardest working parts of our body and these are continuously exposed to light, wind, and many other harsh elements including pollution. Unfortunately, we do not do enough to care for these vital organs”.

People may now be more health conscious than ever, but too many overlook their vision when it comes to their personal health. In fact, despite a majority ranking vision as the number one sense they would not want to live without, one-fifth of all Indians do not consider eye exams to be important.

“I think we all value our vision, but clearly there is a tremendous gap in the value we attach to our eyes versus the care we give our looks”, says Dr. Maneesh.

Visiting an eye doctor regularly is the most important way to ensure healthy eyes. more

It's quite likely that a person who claims to be seeing well both in distance and near without spectacles at the age of 65 years, may be having one eye weak for distance and the other for near. This is not rare...and in children, especially, who have normal vision in one eye and weak sight in the other, can be critical as it may lead to amblyopia (or lazy eye condition) in the weaker eye if not attended to properly in time. more
Question is if a person read newspaper with the shortest print, and see clearly long distance without using specs even at age of 65 will it mean his eyes are not perfect, does he have to wear specs still. more
Please read the correct sentence as: ...and in my entire professional life of over 50 years, I haven't come across even one person over the age of 60 years who has normal vision for distance as well for near in each eye separately. more
