Corruption in the Jail system- Inputs Sought

In the last 12 months we have received multiple posts on corruption in jails in India.

Cases reported are bribes to let visitors meet with prisoners. Also, in some cases it has been reported that the staff takes bribe or threatens to beat prisoners. Petty bribes have been reported where the staff takes money to provide facilities to some.

While we understand most members will not have direct experience, we request you to reach out to your extended network and report every bribery issue in jails in India.

We will then discuss solutions and take up the matter with key stakeholders for actions.

We look forward to your inputs!

You are right. Why at all would relatives give money to the UTP if there is no shop inside? Who runs the shops or ?? are they shops or someone carrying out the trade. Bigger criminals even steal the clothes of first time UTPs who are usually put in on false reports. would they dare report the theft? Jails are overcrowded corrupt governments would not care. more

Hindustan Times Mumbai edition of 29th June 2017 published and article titled "Lavish life and times of Dossa, even in jail". In this article HT wrote: "Dossa was the ‘richest’ inmate at Arthur Road jail in the past 14 years and he seldom missed an opportunity to flaunt his money. In jail, he lived lavishly by allegedly bribing staff with the money provided by his family. His penchant for designer clothes followed him to Arthur Road. He would exercise regularly and the dumbbells he used had been brought from Dubai following a court order. Fellow inmates recall tales of his durbars in jail and how he rewarded his loyalists with expensive gifts and gave a monthly ration to their families. Insiders also talk about his lavish Sheheri (breakfast) and Iftar for more than 300 prisoners during Ramzan for the past 14 years. One of his former fellow inmates at Arthur Road told HT Mustafa’s generosity was driven by his indomitable desire to maintain his sway over jailbirds." Is this good enough evidence of corruption in Jails or more information is needed? more
This is good initiative and similarly Transparency International must interact with public on more daily life issues and find ways to identify and expose corrupt practices of the system please... like public dealings in Police, Municipal Corporations, Government Procurement and all such activities affecting lives of people Thanks more
It is a known fact that irregularities are common in jail premises. It is known that even criminals who are sent to jail for most unlawful crimes enjoy all types of freedom in the jail, including freedom and help to plan and execute their dreaded activities in the country. All this happen with the help of some corrupted officials and yet no action is being taken against these people. It is high time that proper action is taken to book these culprits so that they are never ever allowed to go scot free. Why can't we promulgate a proper system to stop these practices. more
