Cataract – the most common cause of `curable’ blindness in India

The eye works like a camera, specifically a digital camera. There is the front lens of the camera (cornea), the aperture (iris), the film (retina), and a cable to take the image to the brain (optic nerve). This “camera” also has an additional lens – the natural crystalline lens, which lies behind iris. This natural lens is flexible when we are young, allowing us to focus at distance then instantaneously up close. Around age 40, this natural lens starts to stiffen, necessitating the need for reading glasses for most people. This stiffening is the beginning of the aging process that eventually leads to formation of a cataract. We refer to the lens as a cataract when it becomes sufficiently cloudy to affect one’s quality of vision, writes Dr Sumit Garg in NKCF 2015 January E-Update and illustrates it with the figure that beautifully describes cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and successful surgeries with simultaneous replacement of the opacified eye lens with an intraocular lens (IOL), says Dr Maneesh Kumar. more

Thanks, Optom. Karvendra Singh...you know it but for the benefit of other members, I would like to say that while `safed motia' is cataract, `kaala motia' is glaucoma. And while cataract can mostly be successfully operated, a glaucoma patient needs to consult an ophthalmologist immediately at the sign of first symptoms (or by way of periodic eye examination). more
good info about [safed motiya] cataract. more
