Gutka and Chewable Tobacco continues to cause mouth cancer to hundreds of thousands of citizens of India each year and despite the Dec 2016 unconditional ban by Hon'ble Supreme Court on all forms of chewable tobacco, the implementation is poor at best. In most places chewable tobacco is being sold near schools, colleges and the same shops are selling packaged snacks and sodas thereby making students susceptible to trying it.

Citizens collectively via LocalCircles demand that FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) strongly and seriously enforce this ban immediately via state food safety departments across India and start action on citizen reporting.

While i have signed the petition, I believe the bans usually do not work well in such a large country. So better option is to educate the coming generations so that the need for gutka consumption drops and eventually goes away.

Without education, any change is at best temporary.

Even if the current government decides to ban, there are no guarantees that it will last. The Gutka lobby is quite powerful and probably has the backing of many politicians. So in the not too distant future, someone will over turn the bank or go to court, putting a halt to the process. There are enough systemic loop holes that can be used for their advantage.

Teaching healthy life style is the only way to go. more

I agree that now central Govt. should ban on Gutaka/ chewing tobacco like liquor ban in some of states. This will improve not only health of public but also help in achieving 'swachh Bharat '.All colourful spitting on many walls, roads, public places will not be there due to such restrictions.. Start with Govt. Offices and slowly on all India basis... more

As with many ills of the society, educating the parents would be more effective in self-banning the "gutka" problem so that parents can teach their children what is good and what is bad. And they have to be taught when very young, the moldable age.

We cannot leave the responsibility of raising the children properly to the government. Parenting is not easy, and thus we blame everything on the government.

Food for thought!!! more

The Spiritual and Yoga Gurus can be the driving force in persuading/dissuading people from consumption of cancer causing substances. There should be a vigorous drive in the country, using all available means to educate the people, especially the common man and those living below poverty line. There are various laws concerning sale and consumption of such harmful substances, but strict enforcement and compliance is lacking due to various reasons. more
