Chennai Municipal Corporation

The laying of roads in Chennai is nothing but a money making racket. Quality is always poor, so that someone can make money next year, too, when the road has disintegrated again. The contractors, those who award the jobs and those who pass the jobs are all in a nexus. Layer upon layer upon layer of poor work. Over the last few years, the level of the top layer on Besant Avenue, where I take a walk every day, has risen by at least half a foot, till it is now higher than the footpath level at places.

The racket runs like this: every year shoddy relaying of the rod is done. There is no digging up and relaying, but new layers are just piled on top of old layers and the road level keeps rising. The shoddy material used is calculated to barely last one year, so that the next year someone can again make some money.

I am a Civil Engineer and have done a lot of works including National Highways. I also worked in Quality Control Unit and tested the work done on Highways.
By seeing the type of work being done by Chennai Corporation I feel pity on the type and quality of work being done. I am residing at Mogappair and the quality of work being done is very bad. Roller will be kept and the driver will be sleeping. This I have seen when gone for morning walk at Mogappair west. After some time he will make one trip on the surface. No supervisors to supervise the work. I waited there to see the quality and was much disappointed that the public money is being wasted by Corporation.. Corporation should recruit honest Engineers and should give training in the respective field. Will the authorities will take some action on these bad works.

The Roads in Chennai are being topped up with layers of blue metal and concrete without proper milling or digging. The houses in most parts of the City have now carpeted with the surface of the road or have gone a few feet below the roads causing inundation of water within the houses during the rains. Lack of any serious approach on the part of the administration to address peoples concerns with sincerity seems to be the main cause for Flooding in most of the areas in and around Chennai. We have esteemed institutions within the city like the Anna University, IIT Madras etc.. several research scholars have been constantly working on the issues relating to Flooding, Urban Planning and Development etc. Why is the local administration not taking the people who have the experience and knowledge into confidence and ask them for suggestions???? The nexus between the Politicians and the Officials has today made Urban Development Projects as a major source of income. This situation needs to CHANGE and until the people of the City wake up and ACT, we will be in for major disasters in the years ahead. The R
