Why is AC considered a luxury in such a hot country

ACs are no longer a luxury.
They’re a basic necessity, for health, for sleep, for working people, for children studying in cramped, hot rooms.
And yet, the government treats them like they’re a sin.

We talk about Digital India, Viksit Bharat, Green Growth but tax an essential appliance like it’s a rich man’s toy.

If we’re serious about development and climate resilience, we need to fix this.
Lower GST on essential cooling, and promote energy-efficient, affordable ACs.

The current Govt stand shows how disconnected they are with the ground reality more

While using AC we tend to cool our rooms and forget how much heat we are pouring out side of our rooms. ACs are more convenient than desert coolers in terms of space occupancy and daily filling with water etc. but it is no way echo-friendly. making one's own life comfortable without thinking that it is extremely harmful to environment and others is luxury in it self. High GST rate and huge electricity bill is not enough to compensate the loss done to the environment. I believe that one ought to prefer coolers in place of ACs. Fixing new minimum and maximum temperature range between 20 to 28 degree C. in place of 16 to 30 degrees C. is a move of government in the same direction to compensate some loss to environment which proves that the Govt. certainly treats it as a luxary. more
Desert coolers are much better than ACs as they are environment friendly and consume less power. Where there is no humidity, only desert coolers be installed. more
No body really has studied in detail the cooling of houses and offices. 1. Natural cooling , which was being followed by our ancestors has been forgotten. 2. Only coastal areas, where the climate is humid, need ACs. Rest of the country, air coolers serves the purpose very well. We do all sort of improvements in ACs, but the coolers are always neglected. I have done certain changes in my air cooler and it consumes less water and gives more cooling. more
well said all our cities are becoming concrete jungle with all greenery lost due to which temp is increasing and together with pollution and this is being done indiscriminately by all states without bothering as to how it effects the environment more
Remove all air conditioners from govt offices and houses, political offices (including parliament) and their houses. None of these travel in ac coaches or qc flights or cars. Then, let them feel and decide. more
