Traffic -- Lets be prepared for tomoorow
Increasing traffic on the roads is become a worldwide problem. It has become infact a critical issue. In the evening hours if it takes one hour to cover five KM in city like Gurgaon , its criticality can well be understood. And one of the issue is our never chaniging mentality. We so called educated people never follow traffic rules, we talk good about the rulesbut thats meant for others to follow. A big part of the problem is bad road designing and bad contions of road but an equal part goes to people not following traffic rules. We only follow rules when there is a policeman on the road else we follow our own rules---
In interesting case near Iffco Metro station in Gurgaon on July 30 when the traffic was moving at very slow speed, while driving in the last lane on the road I found one car ahead of me, I thought there must be traffic ahead and so its not moving but after few minutes I noticed it was stationed there. I asked my wife to get down and tell him to go ahead or park it off the road. To our surprise the man on driving seat started arguing that he will not move the car as he is waiting for someone and this particulat point is a landmark. My wife tried to convice that better he took car off the road but he was not ready and the result was traffic Jam. He was an educated person and still ---------
We need to improve on the roads and change our mentality else there will be jams and accidents and we ourselves will be the victims. more

We see in Gurgaon that HUDA and the Police live in a different world and the MCG is new and on the learning curve. It's private enterprise that's driving Gurgaon. To ffatalfast track development we probably need an autonomous "Gurgaon Administration" more

Cange of habits takes time, possibly decades, but is necessary and desirable...and so regular and sustained education, firm enforcement of transport and traffic rules, imposition of heavy monetary penalties, jail terms on conviction of specific offences, ably strengthened with the use of technology, is called for. Sometimes, of course, drastic events such as death or grievous injury in a road accident, road rage incident may cause change in individual behaviour. more
