Testing for Diabetics with cholesterol/BP
Asking this Q in reference to my father who is 60+
How often should he be getting sugar tested in a lab. He also has high BP and cholesterol and takes medication for that along with Diabetes.

As a diabetologist, I suggest to my patients a check of sugars using their glucometers on a regular basis. As for the other tests, I suggest an annual check up, considering the high costs of investigations. That is however in patients whose sugars are well controlled and steady. If not so well controlled, I suggest a higher frequency of tests- so its quite dynamic that way. Costs incurred by many patients in treatment is high for them. Very frequently I see retired people who are just able to manage to buy the medicines. In such patients, I dont see the point of pushing for tests so much. Again, for tests, I would suggest to meet your diabetician and plan out the tests. The need for tests should be decided clinically. If you are doing home monitoring with glucometer , go to any nearby reputed lab having /run by a pathologist to cross check ur readings once in a month either Fasting or PP regularly. Get HBA1c tested quarterly . Besides LFT/KFT & Lipids to be tested at least once a year or preferably twice in a year. more
