Tax on products from Self help groups

I ordered dress from a self help group of cooperatives. The dress cost was ₹1500. And there was a tax of 12%. Effectively, I paid ₹1680.
Given that these small groups of artisans and weavers are struggling to make even one end meet, the govt. needs to remove or reduce the tax to a token of 1 1 or 2%. If they can give all sorts of benefits to the big corporates and industries, these small groups definitely need some help. more

Your indivudual pity for SHG (Self Help Groups)-taxation-existing smacks of not substituting a right discrimination for a wrong one . For example, the Courts-of-Law have no jurisdiction under Article 226 to go into reasonableness of Telephone Tariff Rates which are decoded and decided as policy matter in fiscal planning. There is no legislative prescription of rates. Rates are a matter for legislative judgement and not for judicial determination. The SHGs are informal groups of people who come together to address their common problems. While self-help might imply a focus on the individual, one important characteristic of sHGs is the idea of mutual support. Finance Minister announced to double collateral-free loans to Rs 20 lac for Self-Help-Women-Groups that would benefit 7 crore households. With this announcement, 63 lac Self-Help-Women-Groups are to avail of collateral-free loans for operations. 7,200 new SHGs have been formed in the wake of lock down and financial inclusion . Finance Minister also lauded self-help group movements led by religious and spiritual leaders and advised banks to give up any hesitation in giving loans to such groups backed by credible leadership because of the social, religious and spiritual leaders leading the self-help group movement while banks are to recognise the social, religious and spiritual leaderships. more

Business people can claim gst refund, how about those who are not into businesses? This may not affect the seller. Customers would backout when they see the 12%gst. In my case, the cost shown was 1500. But, when I came to the payment stage, it showed 1680. I thought of not continuing with the order, but placed the order. more
