Below are the key issues, root causes and solutions to improve the State of Sports in India.
Kindly review and if you have any additional inputs on either one of them, please share your comments.
We will soon be compiling a whitepaper on the subject to be presented to Ministry of Sports so actions can be taken on these recommendations.

Improving State of Sports in India - Key Solutions
1. The political influence and participation from the sports bodies should be completely eliminated
2. The sports bodies should be headed by sportsmen who have played at national/international level
3. Investments should be made on improving people’s interest in not-so-popular sports
4. National/international level athletes should be given free medical care
5. More sports injury rehabilitation centers should be opened in different parts of the country
6. Investments should be made in taking the sports infrastructure to international levels
7. Parents should be counselled that their children can make a career in sports too
8. Good media coverage should be done around other sports except cricket to make them popular
9. National athletes should be given some monthly stipend to take care of their daily expenses
10. Coaches should be selected after a thorough test and they should be reviewed on a strict matrix bi-annually
11. Government should invest in opening quality sports academies with the vision of producing national/international level sports persons
12. All sports academies should have good hostel facilities for the students
13. Selection for teams should be completely based on performance
14. Government should tie up with private players to run sports education and training colleges
15. Sports bodies should be closely monitored by the Government
16. It should be made mandatory for the schools to have a playground
17. Special schemes should be announced by the Government for girls who want to pursue sports as a career option
18. All government schools should have good coaches for various sports like tennis, badminton hockey, kabbadi, football etc.
19. The gap between money allocations made by the Government and it actually reaching the sports persons should be reduced by implementing transparent processes and systems
20. Government should give scholarships to the achievers and support them with training, scholarship and medical assistance
21. The private sector should also follow the Government enterprises in offering jobs to sports persons.
Root Causes for State of Sports in India
1. Many leaders of the sports bodies do not have actual experience with the sport itself
2. A lot of money allotted for the athletes is lost to scams
3. Corruption, black money, scams have become part and parcel of Sports in India
4. Lack of proper monitoring of sports bodies by the Government
5. Lack of proper policy and lack of strict enforcement to encourage and nurture talent
6. There is corruption in recruitment and selection process
7. Lack on good sports medicine hospitals in the country
8. The upgradation of equipment and facilities is running far behind schedule
9. Sports academies lack the basic infrastructure
10. Sports are still not considered a career option in India
11. Parents think of sports as an extra-curricular activity
12. Cricket has become a glamorous game which involves huge money. Hence other sports do not get equal importance
13. The financial support given by the Government to the athletes is very poor
14. Lack of quality and experienced coaches
15. Coaches treat their job as any other Government job
16. Academies are run with the intention of pure profits
17. Schools convert the sports grounds into classrooms to admit more students
18. There is a lack of a sporting culture in India
19. Girls are discouraged from playing sports
20. The number of playgrounds and parks in the cities are continuously decreasing
21. No weightage is given to sports in prestigious exams like IIT, AIIMS, PMT, IMA etc.

Comprehensive inputs...but honestly for a kid to pursue sports no incentives are given so many kids drop out in high school.. Moreover half of the federation or association conduct events but children are denied marks quota....I believe they should drop the marks system altogether more

- There should be a fee structure for all players across all games. - BCCI should part with 50% of their earnings to promote other sports. - Sports administration should be handled by professionals and not politicians or babus. - No one holding a govt job or in a political role should be allowed to be part of any association. - Sports persons with international credentials should be part of the administrative team. - No term on the committee should be more than 2 years and there should be only 1 or 2 terms at the max. - No family members of anyone in the committee should be allowed to hold any post in the association or committee for atleast 15 years after the term ends. - All budget allocations to sports associations should be made transparent along with how the money was spent. - Budgetary allocation should be made in advance for any travel / stay etc of sports authority personnel. Currently all the money is spent on the comfort and travel of the sports authority and their family. - No foreign travel for sports authority members / officers / politicians and any family. Only officials required to assist the sportsperson should be allowed and the percentage for sports events should be only 10% of the contingent should be officials. - No family members of association should be allowed to misuse any of the facilities, infrastructure or benefits allotted to the member. - Find them young - we need to have under 5 teams and under 14 teams for every sport. - Schools should not be given approval to open schools if they do not have an adequate play ground. Most schools are in shopping complexes, on the road, with no open area for the children, leave alone having any sports program. - Schools with sports programs should be given incentives and benefits. - Youngsters should be given an opportunity to compete in international events. We have seen over the years that sports persons who have passed their prime and are no longer able to give their best continue to make it to the team for events at the cost of the country and the youngsters waiting for a chance. Only those at their fittest should be allowed to participate and encouraged to grow in their game. - Equipment and infrastructure needs to be of international standards. We should not have to see our sports persons having to run without shoes, train in leaking sheds, spend their own money to buy equipment, etc. - Stadiums are being given out for weddings and non sports activities and are therefore not being maintained. This needs to be stopped and sports activities need to be given importance. - Sports persons especially children require a special diet. The govt / associations should ensure that they are provided with all the nutrition and daily food requirements that helps them grow and play best. more
