Simultaneous Elections - Pros and Cons

The subject of conducting simultaneous polls at center and in all states has been raised in this circle and outside.

The key benefits projected are governance efficiency, productivity and focus rather than politics. The negative talked about it the risk of a non performing Government lasting a 5 year term.

With this post we would like to seek your inputs on the subject and the pros/cons of conducting elections simultaneously.

We will also seek quantitative inputs via a poll and then share the same with Election Commission and any other related stakeholders. more

1. The lobbying by and in political parties will continue in any mode of Elections 2. The simultaneous elections befit the nation in two ways . First is the reduction in Election Expenses and prolonged rivalry between parties that effects the national income , income of the society , attention of public administration as well as the real concept of Elections for a good governance to the general public . 3. The continued illegal habit of Purchasing Votes as well as catching the Vote Bank of Communities with various wrong routs like befitting certain categories and classes thus depriving off the real general public COULD ALSO BE SET FOR A CHECK OF ITS FOLLOW continuously at one place or the other . This will arrest some sort of selfish desire even in the Voters waiting for such undue wants . more
I feel that conducting election in one go is better for the development of our country. Every 6 to 8 months there is election in one state or the other thus three to fourth month are last because of code of conduct, No development is possible because full govt machinery is engaged towards election . more
In the prevailing political situation, there is no guarantee that any govt will last its full term. Therefore, there is no use trying to synchronise central and state elections. And what about local body elections. In a mature democracy, the issues in central, state and local body should be different. By holding simultaneous elections, these all will get combined and the most favoured of the time may sweep all elections. A party which may be good for the centre at a given time may not be good for local body or vice-versa. Hence it is not a good and practical idea to sunchronise all elections more
The subject of conducting simultaneous polls at center and in all states has been raised to attain single party rule both at center and in majority of the states. The time gap between the two might be the reason for different referendum in the center and the state elections. It would have worked few years back, but now with percentage of literate electorate moving up in the recent elections, results could also be different at the center and the state in the same election. Democratic governance of ours provide ample opportunity for the opposition to be in place, which could be disturbed with single time mandate. The basic problem with today's governance is not the elections, but a continuous rivalry between the parties and using or at least suspicion of using governance for projecting an individual party not the governance. Constitution does not have answers for that nor the ruling party. With emergence of regional level parties single time elections may result into more complicated verdicts and rule of forced coalition governments. However such situations could be sorted out with election of PM through peoples mandate directly together with MPs and MLAs. Such PM although hailing from a particular party may have the opportunity of using best MPs beyond party lines, even. Unless there is difference between the electoral battles and routine politics, governance would always suffer irrespective of developed through elections carried out in gaps or together. more
In a vast country like India having a large number of States with mountainous terrain, it may be difficult to deploy security forces to all the booths (at least) particularly to the booths identified as sensitive. Also, infrastructure & man power to conduct the elections will become difficult to manage Hence, holding of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha & the State Assemblies may not be a feasible one. However, I wish to add that reforms in the ECI are due & must consider all these aspects before amending the concerned Act. more
