Sexual abuse of women and children
I think most people dont realise esp men but sexual abuse of women and children is far more common at home by relatives, friends, domestic helps, people known to them.
Most women forever have just lived with it. Even if they wanted to report, the elders in the family wouldn't, as it would spoil social reputation, marriage wont happen, etc.
We should discuss how this can be reduced, how can women be empowered, how can they be made aware, how can they report without jeopardizing future and family reputation.
This has to be a social and community phenomenon, govt can only do little. more

you are right, victims have to be courageous to report such incidents but motivation can play a vital role in this direction. more

Unlawful Sexual intercourse shall be set to life imprisonment . If Women consents , she also shall be so set . If both agrees to marry with life long commitment for joint life as wife & Husband , Marriage be permitted without any imprisonment curbing all wealth share of parental & of Husband . more

Domestic Maid servants are also often very much susceptible to abuse by the male members and the episodes are hushed up by the Female members of the same family out of fear of losing social prestige. When the dirty linen gets out in the public Eye then the character of the poor maid servants are assassinated. I have several cases of such category in my knowledge but those poor illiterate maid servants dont rely or believe in the Administration or in the complexity of a Judiciary. more

EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN, now what left to be added in the bag of EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN? Is it not meant EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN is not the remedy to save our women and children from the hands of social evils? Each and everybody have their own view depending upon experience in their life. As such in my opinion the punishment being sentenced to the convicts is to be changed must be equal to the punishments imposed during government of ancient kings, after keeping aside Human Right Commissions. more

Dear Anushka, If you are talking about incest then: for children, we need to teach type of touches, which are good and bad. Also teach them that how they have to be with relatives, friends and strangers. Also make sure that you are providing an environment where your child will come and tell everything without hiding. For ladies: They must maintain the clear boundary between herself and the other male members. if this boundary is vague or not clear or permissible, then only male perpetrator will take the advantage. If the boundary is clear, he will not invade it. also, It happens in such a way that slippery slope could also happen, where initial vague or loose boundary will lead to gradual demarcation and then abuse. Another personality trait- we call Dakshinya or Mulaju ( in Kannada), I do not know the equivalent English word (A kind of shyness?) could also attract the abuser. Generally this trait will lead to slippery slope. Kindly note that I am not saying woman or girl is responsible. She is nowhere responsible for the heinous act. I am only saying how she could protect herself, through being aware of the environment. As sexual abuse is a crime, it should be dealt with legal guidelines, like reporting to police. As a psychologist, mild offenses could be dealt in counseling sessions, where perpetrator will go through the process. I hope I cleared your doubts. more
