Senior Citizens are an untapped resource for civic action in our country. We would like to request your inputs on the role Senior Citizens can play in Swachh Bharat. Kindly list all you can think of. We will compile those and circulate them to the over 4000 Urban Local Bodies across India so on ground actions can be taken. more

They can take up an important role of writing and coordination with various govt. bodies like municipal department, police, central and state govt., follow up, reminding, giving fresh ideas and solutions. more
Every ward and mohalla should nominate the active senior citizens and a committee with corporate should be formed for looking after cleanliness in their respective areas. more
Each house owner should be asked to keep two boxes for disposal of waste which could be picked up twice in a week from a fixed place in front of the house during pre announce time slot of two hours. If they do not put these boxes outside house and just throw the waste/garbage on street there should be huge penalty imposed on the house owner. Likewise person in charge of lifting the waste from these boxes also should be assigned responsibility. Senior citizen can volunteer to monitor the performance of house owners and persons picking the waste from colony. more
Though citizen participation is helpful in maintaining cleanliness in the area, certain amount of accountability is also required in respect of sanitary staff of the municipal bodies, so that they act with alacrity and do not let heaps of garbage lying on the streets which invites stray animals and birds and causes spread of epidemics in the area. As many participants have already pointed out, adequate dumpsters should be provided in each locality and they should be emptied and replaced on a regular basis. more
